Yes the long action bolt head will be to long, but you can cut the tail off to fit,
best thing to do is buy a new bolt head
im trying to convert my savage 11 from 223 to 243 while i understand the basics im looking for some specific information so here i am
i understand my 223 rifle has a bolt face .384 in diameter and i need a .470 bolt face and of course the new barrel go and no go gauges and so on my questions are primarily about the bolt face
does the .470 bolt face have to be a short action bolt face i have a savage 110 in 30-06 after a bit of inspection it appears my stock firing pin will be to short for that bolt head but some clarification would be amazing thanks in advance

ok thank you any recommendations on where to get a complete head at?
Gun Shack sell bolt heads + the bolt head parts
your parts from your bolt head should work
The parts will work, but the .223 extractor might need to be shortened from the back end. (Grind/file it down so the extractor is not so long it won't slide past the outside edge of the head when the case is inserted/loaded into against the face. I don't know how to explain it better than that, but the .223 extractors are often too long for the .308 sized bolt heads.
ok thank you both for the information i intend to keep the 223 bolt head intact to be able to switch calibers later if i need to
