Savage 12 PTA for .308 FTR build.

Hey guys, getting ready to start on my new .308 ftr build from a Model 12 single shot target action.
My question is: Just how good is the action? I'm buying new, and having the barrel fitted. Is it necessary to have the action trued, bolt face squared etc., or are they barrel ready straight from the box?

Fantastic actions right outta the box and barrel ready.

Thx LR. I've got 700 actions, but I can't justify the cost having it trued if the savage is ready to go.

I shot 3 barrels on my PTA before i had any work done to it and just recently had it trued up and honestly i dont know that it made a difference...personally i think adjusting the firing pin protrusion, adding a trigger and a tighter fitting bolt body is all thats needed to make a savage action a very good and affordable action...i also think having a smith thread a barrel to fit the action is a big plus.

It will all be threaded, fitted, and assembled by a smith. Prob go with a SSS trigger. Now, tighter fitting bolt body, like have a new one custom turned by a smith or are they a catalog item?

The PT&G bolt body's work great and look good too...they take up most of the slop in the action and after being cycled awhile they really smooth out.

Can I hear some particulars on the firing pin protrusion adjustment? Thanks

I've got a brand new one sitting here in the box just waiting for my barrel from Jim B. When I got it I really gave it the once over. This one looks good, all its getting is the barrel screwed on. I'll know at the end of next summer what I think of it.

It's junk if it's a single shot RBRP, I.F. Just save yourself the time and send it to me. Btw, what's a good price? I made a call last week and was quoted $550. Seems like most guys say they're paying $350-$400.
