quick release rings?

Was at the range about 4 months ago and an army sniper was down a couple of benches from me. When we had a break in the action, he made his way over to chat. He had been in some tough situations and had a couple of prominent scars and indicated in a very humble way he had gotten a few medals along the way. We got into the discussion of optics and rings and he noted I had three rifles with me, all with different glass and different quality -- 308, 270 wsm and a 325 wsm.

What his suggestion to me was for me to get one nice expensive scope on quick release rings. He has one scope for four rifles and told me he would not hesitate to take the scope off of one gun and place on another one and guarantee sub moa. He keeps notes of the settings for each rifle and he indicated that several of his past army buddies did the same.

Does anyone out there use the quick release rings and if so, what are the best and I guess I need a good rail as well.

If I didn't already have so much invested in so many different scopes and mounting systems, I would do the same thing. I have seen some top quality systems made by a local (Michigan) guy that cost about $100-150 each. I can't remember who it is, either.

Wish I had started with it. Would certainly have at least one $3,000 Nightforce or US Optics or something of the kind and use it on all my rifles, for sure. As it is, I will never be able to afford anything like that. Eager to hear what others have to say about this and systems they find that work well.

I have done this. I would always sight it in and use quality rails of the same make if possible so the spacing is correct. Picatinny rails are all standard dimensions if they meet 1911 specs.

Wal,,,, i was reading in a forum thread one day and a fellow talked about doing this same thing , one scope , many guns,,,,at age 62 im kinda old school,,,,,,a scope is dedicated to a rifle for sight in reasons,,,but i got me thinking , with the advancement of scope turrets and the precision of mounts ,,,,,,,,with a little mental flexibility the whole deal might work

Years ago Bausch&Lomb made the Balvar series of rifle scopes. There were no adjustments in the scope at all.
Their adds also showed the scopes soaking in a bucket of water.
All the adjustments were in the mount. I had several of them and swithched them around to different guns with no
issues on scope zero.
With proper notes kept there is no reason why a good scope couldnt be switched between guns.

I would jump out and say you don't even need QD rings to do this. With a high quality uni-mount like NightForce, SPUHR, American Rifle Company (ARC), or some of the others as long as you follow the proper torque settings they will definitely hold very tight settings. I've removed and re-attached my optics before a match when using the SPUHR mount and didn't really note a difference at all.

Yes as well. Have Warne QD mounts. About a 1/4 moa change with removal and installation onto my one piece YHM 20 MOA base. Just fine for my use.

While the theory is sound and it is certainly possible.... I would only use that switchback system until I could upgrade all my lesser optics.
1: I hate moving them......just a hassle.
2:Having one rifle out of commission with one scope problem really sucks......having four out of commission because of one scope problem......GRRRRRR.
Even top tear scopes can fail. Usually not as often but it happens.
3: I only have two level of optics now days, A: Great..... B: Not

It works well for me. I have 4 long guns and 2 really good scopes. Use Warne rings AND Warne bases. When switching scopes, I am sometimes 6-7 inches off right or left, depending on rifle, but like you said, keep a log, and you will be within MOA. I little fine tune does not bother me.

This was my thought process when I purchase my 1st Nightforce scope (NXS 3.5-15x56 W/ZeroStop). I went with a Bobro 1 piece QR base http://www.bobroengineering.com/view/product/7/

I've since purchased 2 additional NF scopes (same magnification) and 2 additional Bobro 1 piece bases.

My last build (finished it this past Aug.) I purchased another NF this was the new enhanced ATARC 5-25x56 MOAR-T and once again purchased a Bobro 1 piece mount. http://www.bobroengineering.com/view/product/16/

I have only removed one of the 4 NF scopes and re-installed it and the zero was nutz on.

ARC rings are about as close as "Quick Detach" as I'll go. 1 allen screw front and rear and that sucker is ready to come out, but I have no doubts that when they're tight, it's not moving. I have no idea if that'd even be considered QD, but it's quick enough for me. Something about those levers that has me uneasy about housing a $3k scope, LOL.
