Hey! Years ago my dad passed me down his Savage 110 in 308. It's the original style, first few years of production as I remember looking up the serial number at the time.
I took it all apart, bedded the stock, put on a new scope and refinished the stock and it shoots GREAT. Trigger is fantastic.
Anyway it's had issues ejecting lately, and a closer look revealed part of the clip on style extractor is broken. They seem to be a little hard to find so I was hoping you guys might know a good source. This gun has even shot steel ammo until now reliably, but I wouldnt mind freshening things up if possible.
So I was wondering if there are any drop in upgrades such as a newer style bolt that I could drop in?
IF not I was hoping y'all might have a source for the clip on extractor and maybe firing pin and spring as I'm also having light primer strikes all of a sudden.

Oh yeah and the internal mag kind of sucks also, dunno if there are better followers or something. If I load 3 it's fine but 4 is hard to get it to sit straight.

Welcome to the forum. The older rifles are really sweet guns, but can be a pain to find parts for. The internet is going to be your best friend on that one. As for the FTFs, if the strikes look normal, it is most likely the ammo, so I wouldn't worry about that at this point. As for the internal mag, you might be able to adjust the lips to compensate for wear. Hopefully someone on the forum will know of a source for the extractor for you.

Found an extra extractor at my dads but it was cracked as well. Works a little better than the one that was in it though. Must have been a common problem - there is very little metal on the small side of the clamp.
While I'm here... I have a 6-9" Harris bipod on the front of the rifle, and I feel like I can't really get low enough to shoot it without the buttstock sitting weird (too low) in my shoulder. It's this style
Is that due to the dip in the back of the buttstock? What would be a better solution, a taller bipod or a new stock?

So I determined that my FTF was not the ammo and was in fact light primer strikes. I took the bolt apart today and did some research as to what the firing spring and pin protrusion should be set to but to be honest I don't even know if I got it right. I set the front nut so the protrusion was about .060 max (this changed later). Compressed spring to just under 2 1/16" (I read somewhere it should be 2.05") and kept cycling the action and checking the protrusion, taking it back apart and adjusting front nut until the protrustion was about .050. I was using a drill bit butted up against the pin so it was only a guestimate, but I eyed it out on the short side and figured I'd give that front nut another 1/4 turn if I was still having light strikes.
Does this sound about right to you?? I have sourced an extractor and they say they have the firing pin/spring assembly as well, so I might get 2 extractors and a firing pin/spring if the price is right.
Sounds like you are well on the way to go shooting. Glad to hear it. Are there any more extractors available from this source? I don't need one, but there are probably others on the forum that would like to know.
Yeah it's from Outbackgunparts.com. Price is $40 but super nice guy and seems to have good reviews. There's also one on gunbroker. I wonder how hard it would be to have someone make one from a good part.
sorry to zombie this thread but I was wondering if anyone knows if it's possible to upgrade or replace the entire bolt on this old machine with something newer?
