Wind Drift?

Dont know but I saw a head shot on a nutria at about 200 yards across a pond with a .17HMR in a 15-20mph crosswind. I asked the fella that made the shot if he held about 12" right and he said nah I just held dead on. I'd say the short flight time due to the speed might have a little to do with it but they seem to buck the wind well indeed.

Well i wont comment on the 17 Hornady rimfire because i dont own or have i ever shot one.
But i do own a 17 rem center fire which i shoot quite often. Put it this way, its pretty easy
to miss a crow in a tree at 200 yards with not a whole lot of wind. And that would be shooting from
a bench which sits on my porch just for those occaisions.
But thats just me as there seem to be lots of others who can seemingly shoot better.
Ive yet to own a gun that can shoot thru the wind. Especially one that shoots tiny bullets.

Everyone seems to think that tiny bullets can't cut the wind, but when you compare them side by side with something worthy, you may be surprized.

My chart is showing a drift of about 26 inches at 300 for the 20gr fmj in .17HMR. I haven't put it on paper to try it that far tho. It does really good for what it is.

As far as I know the .17 hmr bullets are much sleeker looking than .22 rim fire. Most of the .22 bullets have blunt noses or are slightly rounded. The 17's are all ballistic tips. I don't know the actual numbers but the 17 bullets LOOK like they are much sleeker. That coupled with the higher velocity could definitely aid in the ability to fight wind.

I will also say that I don't care how fast you shoot, 15-20 mph crosswind will affect ALL small bullets. I have shot 52 g smk's at 3900 fps and in 15-20 mph I see 6+ inches of wind drift at 200 yards. I have also shot 25g .17 bullets from a 17-.223 (at some ungodly speed over 4000 fps) that would never make it to the target in the rain. If the bullet made contact with anything it just plain evaporated. 15-20 mph winds at 200 yards made it almost impossible to shoot.
