Savage 19220 AXIS 223 will not hold sight picture...

I am hunting prairie dogs 200 to 300 yards (shooting off of bags).


I have a Savage 19220 AXIS 223 that I can never see the impact.


If I thread the barrel of the Savage 19220 AXIS 223 and add a muzzle break will it reduce the recoil enough to let me see what I shot at?

Anyone know of a bolt on muzzle break for the Savage 19220 AXIS 223?

(I have a 17 HMR and a 17 Hornet. They both keep the sight picture so I can see the impact.)

I know the standard sporter barrels have an insufficient diameter to thread 5/8-24, and it may be cutting it close to get a shoulder that a 1/2-28 brake could be tightened against. Clamp-on brakes are available for sporter barrels from a few manufacturers like Kahntrol. They're pretty well regarded though I've never used one. Another option would be to swap the barrel for one with a threaded muzzle, whether it's a flared barrel like that on the Axis SR or a heavier contour. A heavier barrel would necessitate a stock change though.

Axises are very lightweight guns, so a part of the problem could be that there isn't enough mass to hold the gun relatively still during recoil. There are a number of threads on increasing the weight by filling voids in the plastic stock with epoxy or Rockite. A heavier stock could also be available from a few aftermarket manufacturers as well.

the good doc has given you the good scoop. do rockite the stock for added weight - far cheaper and easier than going the muzzle brake route (and less annoying noise to others). my .223 axis hb now weights 12lbs 4ozs - which includes rockite in the fore stock, rockite and .45acp bullets (in pvc tubes) in the butt stock, scope and bipod. there will be slight recoil, but it'll be manageable - and you can add more lead weight in the butt stock if need be. in addition, the rockite greatly stiffens the entire stock. the only other mods i made were to fully free float the barrel, add in a basix trigger set to 10ozs, and install an sss single feed ramp.

i dunno about the kahtrol, but i put a witt machine brake on my .308 axis hb w/boyds thumbhole laminate stock and it did two things - loud as tnt to the folks left and right of me on the shooting line, and did help a bit with muzzle rise. i don't like muzzle brakes. the rockite is the better route to go, imo - and a 100x cheaper.

I have the same .223 Axis, I did exactly that...rocktite in forend and buttstock. Careful though if you go in buttstock..make sure its sealed..I used that rubber spray from TV to seal stock. It worked . I can now see my impacts on steel out to 350 yds. Off bipod. It works.

yes! excellent caution on the butt stock as you need to fully seal the hole/joint where the trigger guard unit plugs into! failure to do so won't be all that pleasant, but not catastrophic.

Finish the Rockite.
Loaded all the forearm bays with lead and then poured the Rockite.

wow 11.23lb thats pretty heavy...I wonder what I would weigh, One member suggested a Boyd stock, to add weight, but frankly I like the feel of the "stock" it came with, plus with the $$$ I saved I can buy more ammo!!!!

12lbs 4ozs - and i can go more than a pound heavier if need be. rockite really stiffens and rock steadies these tupperware stocks in both the fore and butt ends, using the plastic as the shell for the cement.

Can Rockite be drilled with normal HSS bits or does it require masonry bits?

rockite IS concrete - i use a carbide masonry bit.

Then it would probably be easier, if one were going to install a Karsten-style cheek rest, to drill the stock and insert some kind of plug before pouring the Rockite.

yes. i'd mark where the cheek piece goes onto the stock and drill two pilot holes, then wedge in or double stick tape in a piece of hardwood to cover those holes, pour in the rockite.
