Thinking of rebarreling one of my rigs to a short barrel truck/coyote/do everything rifle. Was going to step up to 243 or 260 just in case I needed it for a back up deer rifle. But I just love the 22-250 and already reload for it. I want a 20" or shorter barrel. Not looking at a long range gun as I have no where to shoot over 200. How short of a barrel can I run with the 22-250 without the muzzleblast being to obnoxious?
Or just go for it and step up to something else?

Hey Mossy, This fits your description perfectly. I would not worry about muzzle blast a 22-250 only holds 40gr of powder.

Just look at the calibers and results of the 516 strikers. Man a lot of those guys are dead on way way out there with 12' and 14" barrels. That's what I did before I chopped a model 10 with a .308 sporter barrel down to 16". I also chopped a significant amount off the stock and re shaped the recoil pad to fit. I absolutely love the resulting do it all knock around the farm carbine that's 37" overall length including the brake.
I was really surprised how efficient and accurate it is with Barnes 130GR TTSX.
Yeah, Their is a pretty good muzzle blast associated with shooting it but it only lasts a fraction of a second and carrying around something bigger and more cumbersome lasts all day.
A good wife and a steady job has ruined many a great hunter.
Depends on your definition of obnoxious. My 14" striker in 22-250 makes a nice fire ball but compare it to my 15" 300 WSM pistol and it is nothing.
More shooting, less typing.
If a guy was to do a 260 in a 20" barrel would it be worth it to make it an AI to make up the little fps you'd loose by going with a shorter barrel?
since your only shooting out to 200yds or so id say no...id say chamber the barrel around the 123g class bullets(the 123g amax would do what you need very well)and start your load development with RL-17 and a mag primer for winter loads and a standard LR primer for summer loads since you live in the freezer LOL!!
im pretty sure you could easily and safely get 2900FPS with RL-17 out of a 20" barrel and a 123g bullet...im guessing here as ive never shot a short barrel but i think thats where id start.
When you decide to go to all the trouble and expense to AI a chamber, you should not only do it for speed. It should be 49% fps Gain, 49% reduced brass prep and case longevity, and 2% coolness factor.

I just used my Remington model seven in .260 Rem with 20" barrel this past weekend on a coyote hunt. I brought it along because I had yet to kill anything with it and always thought it would make an awesome handling coyote rig. Well it does, but man did it ring my bell and my hunting partners bell who was a good 15-20 feet away from me. I am glad I hit the coyote on the first shot beacause I don't think I could have got off a second one. I was too busy shaking my head rubbing my ears and so was my hunting buddy. Needless to say I went back to my trusty 24" .250 Savage which is much more mild and easy on the ears. Speaking of if you wanted to step up in caliber that would be a great one to consider. 70gr Blitz Kings and 75gr Vmax are hard on dogs and 100gr Game Kings and 115gr Bergers kill deer with ease.
I'm using a 20" bull 22-250ai shooting 70 grain berger vld's @3350. It is a hammer on coyotes, don't really notice it being that much louder. I built on a Savage model 12 action. Made a really nice truck/calling rifle.
Ended up stepping up a bit and ordered a 18" 6.5 creedmoor barrel today. Can't wait!
