I have a 1-7 MODEL 12, I am shooting Berger 80.5 FB bullets. I was wondering if there is an ideal freebore length for that bullet or any other given bullet? I started a search for .223 freebore spec I don't think I saw any two figures that agreed. I don't see how they can have a spec on something like the .223 due to the drastic different bullet lengths? I would think a 1-12 twist would be different from a 1-7 just because I like to seat the heavy bullets out further. I just checked my m12 and I get appor. .150 my Tikka measures .110 anyone have any idea what the spec is supposed to be? I see chamber diagrams but the printing is do small I can't read them. thanks Bob

Freebore is part of SAAMI spec, but most gun manufactures use what they call "voluntary industry specs" when it comes to the freebore. This is done to reduce pressure if someone makes a mistake in their loading, especially in .223. Because the .223 Rem and the 5.56 Nato are very similiar, and will chamber in either one, Savage engineers seen a problem and nipped it in the bud before anything catastophic happened.
