    16/116 short and long?

Surely I'm not the only one to have this question but I searched and could not find the answer. I understand the 16 to be a short action while the 116 is a long action, is this correct?
If so then why the 16/116? I see the 16/116 is available in just about anything. I have 375 Ruger 16/116 which is a great gun but why not just call it a model 16?
Please educate me on this and what the difference is.
Ok so after spending too much time on the Savage website it seems as though they don't offer just the model 16.
    Now I'm really confused.

You have got a grasp on the difference. In advertizing when they need to promote both the 16 and the 116 they often utilize the slash mark to say and. For instance" The model 16/116 are on sale or. The model 16/116 are available with the accu-stock, bottom bolt release and the hinged floor plate and come in stainless steel....as an example. In other instances people may not know what you know and out of ignorance mention both just to cover themselves.
The Dunning-Kruger effect is alive and well.

Bottom line, your 375 Ruger is a Long Action, therefore it is a 116. The 16 is short action chamberings only. The old system worked just fine. But the current logic seems to make sense to the current generation who is calling all the shots?? :-((
