    scope base info needed

I have a savage PTA and would like to put a weaver 40 MOA base on it. But I can,t seem to find an outlet for it. Any help would be appreciated.

What scope and caliber are you running that you need a 40moa base?

Savage PTA Dual port, right bolt, Cal 243AI, 28" Krieger barrel. Scope is a Millett 6x26x56. I have a Weaver #454 base now, I don't know the MOA on it.

I wouldnt go past 20moa on your base...im pretty sure youll not have enough adjustment in your scope for a 40moa unless you zero at 5-600yds.

Where do you think I could locate a 20 MOA base? Or should I just shim temporarily to see if that helps?

You can find a 20moa base at any of the online stores...EGW..midway ect...i use murphy precision bases but they arent cheap.

Get a 20MOA 1 piece base for a model 10 with accu-trigger. All the short action bases for accu-trigger actions are the same screw spacing.

Thank you all so much. If in fact my action is the same as the model 10, That helps a lot. I will give Midway a shot.

I thought the pta was a closed top action?
If so the weaver 10 rail has a recoil lug that would disagree.

Yes, I have a closed top. The base that is on my rifle now is a Weaver # 454. I guess I will call Weaver in the AM.

Don't know about the weaver. I use EGW and Warne bases.

How far you can go with the 20 minit will be dependent on the scope you use also.
My sons 338x378 wouldnt go beyond about 1100 with a 6x24 Vortex mounted on a large 3 lug Saco action.
We switched to 40 minit on that. Windage was a problem also which required U S Optics adjustable rings to fix.
A Nightforce is going on that gun in the next week or so. It will be interesting to see if we need the base and rings.

We are aware of that. He actually bought 2 in mint condition from a friend and former camp member here.
Who at 79 feels he's old and ready for a rocking chair somewhere lol.
Both are n x s models in 8x32 and the other a 5.5x22. He likes power so he is going to use the 8x32 on this gun.
We intend leaving the 40 minit base to see how that works.

with the 8-32 im pretty sure you will have to zero at about 500yds or you will run out of adjustment it has 65moa elevation and 45moa windage....the 5-22 might make it at 200yd zero...it has 100moa elevation and 60moa windage..if i remember correctly my 8-32 was about 15moa on a 20moa base which gave me about 50moa on the dial zeroed at 200yds and anything past about 1500yds i had to start holding for on a 300wm.

I have an 8x32 on my 338 chey tec which is about 200 fps faster than the 338x378 with a 300 gr.
I can barly make a mile using a 20 minit base with the 8x32. We dont hunt that far anyway so its not
really all that important to us. But it can be fun trying to hit rocks once in awhile.

thats why i switched to the ATACR on my 300 and ran the 8-32 on my 260 for a few years...with the ATACR on the 300 i could dial for 1845yds and still had a little left in the turret.
i know he likes the power but he will be better off with the 5-22 on that base...let me know if the 8-32 works out on the 40moa base in interested to know.

I would be using the 5.5x22 if it were me on that gun, probably with the 20 minit base we still have.
But ive stopped telling kids in their 40s and 50s what they should do.
They might get mad and not take me along anymore lol.

And their kids will be surprised to know that grandpop can actually tie his own shoes.
And maybe even drive rt 80 across the country without some sexy voice telling him how.
