Best way to learn how to call yotes in?

Looking to start callin in yotes, never done it before. What's the best way to get started?

It depends on a lot of things such as where you live, how heavy the yote hunting is in your area etc.
Lets start here, if there is a lot of people calling in your area, forget the cottontail call maybe try a jackrabbit instead, even in the mountains.
Get a closed reed call to practice with, (you can use it in the truck on the way to your calling place) remember that each time you call you are teaching them what not to come to. Call softly, they really can hear it even in a 30mph wind, i called one in last week in a very heavy wind and i was using a sqeaker at 160yds down wind. I always hear guys recommending the FoxPro electronic callers, but as suggested, check out the predator/varmint hunting forums (google "varmint hunting forums" or "predator hunting forums")

Again check the predator/varmint forums. The mouth calls definitely work, but no idea what the learning curve is to successfully use them. Hope to try some calling myself soon. Friend has 400 acres in southern Oklahoma and has given me free reign to eradicate hogs and any other vermin that I encounter.

I have seen many favorite comments about the one that someone posted a link to in this thread before. I would try the cheapest route to start and hopefully find a mentor on one of the forums that might be willing to give you some assistance that lives in your area. Good luck. Probably the most important thing in coyote calling is to set up where he can't get down wind of you, or where you can see him before he does.

Get a closed reed call in jack rabbit and try to sound like a rabbit with his boys caught in a bear trap. Start quiet and then pick up the volume after a few minutes.

I'd be glad to come out next winter and help you learn some of the tricks ;D

Thanks for the replies. What is the realistic range of a .17hmr for yotes? A .243? I know a .270 is a bit overkill but I really like my .270. Not planning to save pelts.

Please don't try to drop a yote with a 17HMR! I have seen guys use 204 with less than satisfactory results myself, even though I know that they are more than capable shots. I would recommend a 22-250 at a minimum, but I want to kill what I shot as cleanly and humanly as I possibly can. A 243 is a great yote round in my book.

Ditto on the no 17HMR, you are just asking for cripples.

The 243 and 270 are good for as far as you can hit a coyote.

Best all around in my opinion are the .22-250 and the .243!

I have .223's, used a .22-250 for several years, started my serious portion of pursuing coyotes with two different .243's.

Sold one .243 and kept one and then bought another.

After joining this site, I built a heavy barreled .25-06 but have not drawn any blood with that one (yet).

If you had a very controlled situation, you could drop a coyote with the .17 hmr .... but when are you going to get a "piece of cake" shot like that??

I know several 'ote hunters that rave about the .204 ....... I would not hesitate on one of those.

Just worked up a load for the .243 using Hornady's 65grn Vmax, fast and accurate bullet. Now I just need to find a coyote.
