    .308 or 6.5 creedmoor

So I found my next rifle I want to buy myself for Xmas but I'm debating between .308 or 6.5 creedmoor. I will be long range target shooting from 500 to 1000 yards. I have read the creedmoor is a better round past 700 yards but there is also a higher cost and I'm assuming less availability with it. I will be buying match grade ammo and possibly making hand loads in the future. I was wondering if any of you have had experience with the two rounds and if there is a noticeable difference in long range accuracy?

There is really only one option. Go with the 6.5 and don't look back.

Unless you're dying to shoot F-T/R, I'd go with Creedmoor too.

The Creedmoor is basically the new 308. It has better ballistics, less recoil, and can do everything the 308 ever did and more. It also has a great line of affordable factory ammo which in most cases even costs less than match 308 factory ammo. Start reloading for it and it only gets better.

Therefore I also say Creedmoor. That's where I would start out if I was starting all over again.

If you are just going to target shoot (read bang steel) then the creed but if you are going to shoot in matches you have to decide if you want to get in the rat race of F-OPEN or F-TR and only compete with other 308's and 223's. Each has it's place so good luck.

Definitely would go with the Creedmoor but I would not go with less than a 26" barrel if you are going to shoot long range target.

Before choosing, you need to to look to see ammo availability. The creedmoor is an excellent cartridge, if you can find the ammo. If you can only find 308 match ammo, then I would go with 308.
They who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.

I'm going to go to my local gun shops and talk to them to see if it is a round they keep in stick most of the time. With the 6.5s popularity I would think so. Online the cost difference for the match grade ammo I have seen was only about 40 cents difference.

I thought about this and I can't find 6.5 creed brass anywhere. It seems out of stock everywhere but .308 is easy to find. Also 6.5 ammo is very difficult to find locally.

6.5 CM.... If you are even remotely thinking about reloading... I was in the same boat as you and I got a 308.. I have regretted it many times, however I reload so I never really searched for 6.5 factory ammo... Best of luck to you...

Order 5 boxes of the factory ammo and retain the brass for reloading. I know a lot of guys that compete with the Hornady Factory ammo.

Savage LRP, Ruger Precision Rifle, Remington has a few variants. Also Savages or a few other custom actions are so easy to build, I don't if I'll even buy a factory rifle anymore.

Dude, you are on the Savage shooters forum. You build your rifle, don't even mess with factory stuff.

If you're serious about 1K shooting: get serious about reloading.
The 308 does not hold a candle to the creed regardless.

Ok should have clarified I can't find any hornady brass on stock. Not interested in almost $1.50 per unprimed brass. Too rich for my blood.

You can also call the Savage Custom shop and they can build you a rifle as well if you don't see a model that exactly matches what you're looking for.
