Hey guys I am finishing up a Savage 22-250 build and I am already looking into the near future. I also recently finished up my deer gun. It is a Savage 110 30-06 that I barreled and is now a 338-06. Good shooting gun and I cant wait to get into the woods with it this year. Any way both of those builds were complete guns that I tore down and rebuilt the way I wanted to and used most of the original rifle to build it. My next project I want to start with a stripped down bare action. My question is where do you guys purchase your actions from? I've done some searching and all I seem to find are the Savage Target actions which are nice but wouldn't be ideal for this build as this will be a hunting rifle. I would like to find a 110 or 116 action to start my next build. Right now I'm back and forth between 264 Win Mag and 6.5x284. Any pros or cons you want to add on those two calibers are appreciated. I am definitely doing something in the 6.5 caliber and will most likely be shooting the 140gr projectiles. I want this to be a somewhat light weight mid range hunting rifle. Any help is appreciated.

Get a paid forum membership and keep your eyes on the classifieds or talk to Jim at Northland Shooter Supply for some other fancier options, but they come up pretty regularly around here.
Jim at NSS may still offer standard Savage actions. Paid members sell them often in the classified's on this site as already mentioned. Others check the local pawn shops or buy a new Hog Hunter or Trophy Hunter XP and sell the parts we don't need as new take-offs to get a new donor action to build on.
Since Savage offers the TH XP with a 24" factory sporter barrel in 6.5x284 Norma (Bud's Gun Shop $492) that would be my deciding factor over the 264 Win Mag. Better selection of brass and reloading dies. I would bet that with either H4350 or RL17 and 6.5mm 140 grain bullets you could develop a very accurate hunting load.
Thanks for the info guys. I can't pay to be a member at the moment for a few reasons but I won't bore you with all that. Doesn't the 264 Win have a slight advantage over the 284? Looks like from my reloading book that it has a little better velocity and the belted cases should hold up better shouldn't they? I would guess the 264 is a barrel burning much like the 284?

Not knowing your reasons for wanting to start with an action only, I have had good luck a few times with local pawn shops selling complete 110s for around $200. The best I've done so far is about $175 for a friend's 30-06 with a functional simmons scope. Stip the parts off and sell them , and then you have your action. ;-)

Unfortunately in my area all there seems to be are axis models and rem 700's. I saw a used pre-accutrigger model 110 .270 at a pawn shop the other day and it had obvious signs of use and they were asking $375. I thought that was a little steep so I passed. I guess I will just have to keep my eyes open and maybe I will stumble across one here or there.

No really, my last build was a Creedmoor on a Axis action. I shoot it a LOT. Never had any issues with it.
Ive never just bought an action since the complete rifles are the just about same price or less when on sale, snag them and sell the parts and you come out ahead.
Is the axis action a bad choice to build a rifle on? I know its not the best but I wonder if it would be ridged enough for a long range shooter.
Why would you question the rigidity? It has a solid top like a target action, whereas a standard 10/110 action has an open top and the open tops have proven to be plenty rigid over the course of the last 57 years.Originally Posted by dawg4life

I built on an axis. Get a good stock, after market barrel, egw scope base, a rifle basic sav-1, and a quality optic and have at it.
This is my build in 6.5 Creedmoor on an Axis action. I've been out to 1570yds with it, and regularly shoot out to just over 1000. No issues. It's got around 1500 rds through it and still shoots 1/4 moa if I do my part.

I guess I just never thought about going with the axis action because it being cheaper I looked over it and was mainly wanting a stainless action, hints the 116 in the op.
You can get an Axis in stainless.
