    new reloader .270 win help

Hello all , I just won a Savage Axis 270 win from the LGS a few months ago and
now dug out the Lee 3 hole press i got from my dad and getting into reloading for
rifle. A friend loaned me his die sit and hand me some brass and bullets so this is
    what i have here

1 box of 100 Hornady 270 win 140gr SST with interlock

    1 LB of H4831sc

box of winchester primers and 2 boxes of CCI 200

So off I go researching and reading for the last 3 days.
reading about working up a load and all that and also
reading about what the bullet does to game Deer / Elk / Hogs

Ok , now i really don't need sub MOA groups, just a good load for the SST's
that wont blow baseball size holes thru the game.

watching some vids on youtube on long range shooting by TiborasaurusRex
where he is saying for example a HPBT at close range will rip apart your target like it
should but at long range because of speed dropping it will act as a FMJ

So should i just load for min speed 2600 fps or 2700, 2800 ,2900 ... 3000 is max per
the book The Complete Reloading Manual for the .270 Winchester ... Loadbooks USA.

If funds were better i would just do a load work up and by a few dozen watermellons
and do some testing but would like to get some other input too ..

    thanks

Everyone has an opinion how a hunting bullet should work. My advise, load and shoot a few whatevers with the SSTs then decide for yourself. If you like how they perform then stick with them, if not......

54.0 grains of H4350 or IMR 4350 and any 130gr bullet of your choice should yeild excellent results. I would suggest a 130gr Sierra Game king for a great lethal bullet on game at long or short range.

You can run a compressed load of H4831 with a 140, and still not see pressure signs.

I would recommend getting several reloading books if you're new to loading....You can NEVER have too many books on hand!

My advice would be to start low and work up watching pressure signs to see what YOUR gun likes then see how it performs on gel or watermelons...

You never said what distance you will be shooting...That will make a difference.

Just my 2¢... for what it's worth

    thanks guys for the reply's.

all i have are the 140 gr SST's for now

Fla9-40 , shooting range will be from 20yrds to 300yrd max.

im thinking of loading them up for 2800 fps which is in the middle of the range for
    the H4831 powder i have now ..

Actually that is what I do with those 85gr Barnes and 90gr Speer's and Sierra's, fill it to the top with RL17 and crunch the powder to seating depth. "the base of the neck" And they end result is a 4000 fps varmint rifle out of a plain Jane 270 who knew.

Acer, I think TibRex was referring to match grade bullets like Sierra Match King, which are made for consistency not terminal performance on game. (Although I've knocked a few deer down with them.) Have fun reloading, and he prepared to start down another road of fun, frustration and satisfaction!

Those 140gr SST's are a great bullet for the price. My neighbor was shooting factory 150's and had ok but very unimpressive results. Started handloading 140 SST's at 7rm speeds and never looked back. The low cost and extreme accuracy was phenomenal.
