Why are we so stingy ?
For most barrels we have only four or six rifling grooves.
When Marlin gave us more grooves, they shallowed their depth keeping the stingy mindset.
We want lots of deep grooves.
And why only a constant number of rifling grooves in a given barrel ?
Start with six rifling grooves near the chamber. Add another rifling groove about a quarter of the way. And yet another groove as we approach the muzzle.
Let's not be so stingy.

One would be the only number you would not want as it would push the center of gravity off the center axis creating an unstable wobble. All other numbers within reason can be divided out to put equal force on the center of the projectile.

I have an SMLE 303 that only has 2. It's think it's called tru-groove or accu-groove,I forget. For a gun that was built in the 40's it shoots really good.

And why must all the rifling grooves be conformists and rotate in the same direction ?
Each rifling groove should be free to rotate as it sees fit.
Some clockwise.
Some counterclockwise.
Some in three-dimensional interstellar space.

If I were to shoot an 80gr Nosler from my 1-8" twist 22-250 AI with a muzzle velocity of 3,345fps at the moon from the International Space Station, how many revolutions would the bullet make before hitting the surface of the moon and how much energy would the bullet deliver on impact?
I only ask because I swear I saw a prairie dog poke his head out of a crater while I was looking at the moon through my telescope the other night.
I will even help with the figures.

ISS Orbit = 207 to 270 miles from Earth

We need to further account for the combined precession of both the Earth's and the Moon's tilt.
If memory serves me right, the Earth's tilt is changing at a rate of about 47" per hundred years.
Can't recall right now the rate of change of the Moon's tilt.
Think current guestimates are that if the variation and degradation of the Earth's tilt continues along predicted patterns that within 8 billion years it could have a profound effect on global warming forcing all Montana prairie dogs to migrate to Venus or Jupiter.
Wyoming prairie dogs are more likely to head for Nebraska.

ok you guys are going to force me to do something drastic like quit drinking or something. dadblasted moon pies and moon dog hunting. everybody knows the man in the moon ain't selling no hunting permits this year. besides Dean is the only one with loads that reach escape velocity.
