Savage 340 threads same as big spark plugs???

Since they are .875 x 18tpi (x 1.820 long) does this mean they are the same as large spark plugs - 7/8 x 18?

Be a lot easier to find a tap if so.

Thread the barrel into your cylinder head and see!

No idea but it would make your life easier.

I really don't know why it would matter, but last time I checked large spark plugs are 18 mm.

all the 7/8-18 taps I've been looking at have been in the neighborhood of $80, than I ran across this:

    http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/item....re&dir=catalog

a Tap, Spark Plug Hole, 7/8"-18 NF for $25.

Of course, I don't think I've ever come across a 7/8" spark plug, that's why the question.

It matters cause I am using some 340 barrels for a project.

I have an old 340 in 30-30 that needs a new barrel. I'm also interested in the thread. If anyone knows where, has or finds Model 340 specs, please pass it on.

    yo, Adrian.

    I got mine at e-gunparts.

They have 340 "newer models" used, and older models "unused" still available.

That tap is probably just a thread restoring tap. If thats what you need it for and if it's the same it should be ok. Next question is will it be the same thread type / contour?

Actually, that was the first question.

Regardless, won't need a restoration. Need to start from scratch.

Spend the money on a good tap or you may regret it. Better yet send it to Fred and let him worry about it. lol...

Since it says 7/8-18 NF that means it's "national fine" supposedly a standard thread size. Go to an automotive store to buy a bolt/nut in that size and try on your receiver/barrel. If its from Snap-On personally find the price unrealistic so its probably either inported or a chaser/restorer. Did some checking with my sources and that is a special thread tap size. Here's the URL for the source:

    http://www.toolsavings.com/default.a...rchWithin.y=10

As you'll note they are imports and were either from Poland, Chezovokia, Pakistan, India or Chine the last ones I bought. Most have given me good service for my needs, i.e. few time usages, but suspect they would not hold up in production settings. This outfit used to be called Field Tool Supply and information was given to me years ago by Brownells tech people.

    Good first post, hailstone.

Thanks for the info, and welcome to the "non-lurker" category.
