might be a silly question but are all the axis actions long action?

Technically speaking yes they are all long actions they measure 4.718 center to center. The difference between an Axis short action and Axis long action is in the magazine and the mag well size.

People often refer to the Axis in terms of short action and long action but what they're really speaking about is the cartridge being used.

i did not know that. so when ordering a boyd's stock for an axis .308 action the long action boyd stock should be specified and not the short action stock?

hmm, i don't think so because they don't list a long action for the axis heavy barrel model (.308) ...

... so it must mean the magazine is key when they specify action length.

The .308 cartridge is a short action. So choice number #2

All Axis actions are long action, but the long action has a longer magazine and shorter trigger guard, and the short action has a shorter magazine and a longer trigger guard.
