    284 Brass

Ran into a bit of a problem with my Axis in .284 using virgin Hornady 6.5-284 brass. Chamber reamer measures exactly 0.500" at the base of the body of the case, and my virgin brass is measuring 0.499" in the same location. When fired it sticks in the chamber and I have to remove the spent case with a cleaning rod even though I have good primary extraction. Got some .284 Winchester brass from Fred that measures 0.495" and extracts fine after being fired.

So now I'm wondering what Lapua and Norma 6.5-284 brass measures at the base of the body. Is there a slight difference between .284 and 6.5-284 brass diameter or is Hornady brass just a little oversized? If someone could measure some virgin 6.5-284 Lapua and Norma brass for me it would be greatly appreciated.

I didn't have any virgin Norma brass, but had some 6.5 x 284 Norma brass necked down for 6 x284 which measures .497" at the base. Measured 10 pieces and all were the same reading. Brass is unfired.
