The easiest way I have found is just cut it off and replace it with a notched one.
I noticed it doesn't have the traditional savage Barrel nut. So I was wondering if anyone has removed the barrel and if so how easy was it to remove. Thinking about putting a different barrel on it eventually.

+1, cut it off. I did get one off using Kroil and a pipe wrench. Still sacrificed it and bought a grooved one to replace it.
I use a pipe wrench and replace with slotted one. I used to cut them off, but the pipe wrench has been a lot easier for me.
Still need an action wrench and / or barrel vice, though.
savage use a compression type of wrench (Japanese made) that compresses as it turns to grip the smooth nut....(Pictured in the
if you dont have one handy (or can perhaps can Engineer one) you'll destroy then need a new nut...
