    muzzle brake.

i'm looking for a muzzle brake to fit my shilens .300 win mag varmint barrel. i have a smith that installs brakes, he just doesn't make them. i was told about a muscle brake but i would like to hear more about it. i'm looking to take as much kick out of this rifle as i can.

Check out the Shrewd brakes at Brownells. I have had several kinds of brakes but the Shrewd is as good as any and the price is definitely hard to beat.

    Re: muzzle brake.

Center Shot Rifles is the place to get the Muscle Brake. The design is one of the best on the market period. I felt no back blast towards me what so ever and the reduction in felt recoil was impressive to say the least Check them out at:
    http://www.centershotrifles.com

    Here is a video

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RMit5...layer_embedded

The video show hows the brake forces gases 90 degrees to either side of the muzzle with zero back blast towards the shooter, even with rear angled ports, which are the most effective for reducing recoil. The brake also has a great deal of muzzle area on each port which is ultimately the determining factor on the amount of much recoil reduction. Great design and looks great (IMO).

Radial brakes like the shrewd, are not as effective as the slab brakes as they lack sufficient surface area to reduce the amount of recoil. They also can throw dirt and debris back at the shooter if you are shooting prone, as the brake vents in a 360 manner.

A very well conceived and executed design. I just completed a rifle with one on it and it is much more than I ever expected it to be. Jim See is a great smith too!

You could also see one of 358Hammers Striker videos to see how good that Musclebrake really works.

This is what I installed on the 338 RUM running 300 gr SMK's at 2950 fps. VERY effective brake.

That brake like others are great for the shooter, no perceived gases coming back. But be the shooter 2 benches away and it damned near knocks you over.I can see the need for them on the heavy calibers but I for one just don't like them,I would rather put a suppressor on my guns.

    Re: muzzle brake.

I don't shoot at ranges much, so i don't worry about others beside me, but I do see your point. If were shooting 22-250 or lighter shells, I would not use a brake either, but I do like at least having a chance to watch every shot I make for impact and results, without taking my eye off the target. I also like to shoot a lot when I shot so i hate to get a sore shoulder from extended shooting sessions. Hunting rifles are normally one shot so recoil is not that big a deal. We all have different requirements and wants from our shooting.
I will say that I would never shoot a braked rifle at a busy range though. I am considerate of those around me.

I use a RWS. He will make any style radial hole or baffle style.

    Mine looks like this.

Best of all it was only $40 and ships crazy fast.

Got mine done today, It's a RWS 1" Tapered to my .850 barrel. The brake is pretty seamless but the flash really shows the seam. Will try it out tomorrow

    Re: muzzle brake.

No,not yet. I will tomorrow. I only put a brake on it due to Elbow and Hand surgery. It really only jumped a little-more torques to left than kicks, but I can't take any shock to my elbow. I was amazed my Gunsmith had a $180.00 Painkiller brake there and you should have seen the burr's and machining chips on it!! If I payed 180.00 for that I'd send it right back! For $40.00 buck these are a steal.!

Kirby has a good following, but I have never seen any of his stuff up close before. The Muscle Brake that I got from Jim See was very well machined and finished.

That brake on your rifle would look good if it was three times as much! Looks really good.

    Re: muzzle brake.

i'll be sending my barrel to kevin rayhill when it arrives. he has done all my work in the past and i've been very very happy with it. i was looking to see if anybody made a brake that i could buy and have my local smith put on. i finally made up my mind after looking at a few other sites who would be doing my work. the muscle brake looks great, but kevin has always done me righ so i'll just send it to him.

    thanks for the replys guys.

I have only put 5 rounds thru my new rifle (to check fouling and see how it felt) w/Muscle Brake, but I am very impressed with the performance. Hope to get it sighted in and start working on a load this weekend. I think that you will be very happy with it.

    Re: muzzle brake.

Heres a SSS brake I had Fred put on when he did my Brux barrel. Very nicely done and very effective. Makes my 260 kick less than my 223.

For the price though a Harrells or the RWS is very hard to beat.

    Re: muzzle brake.

I shot mine today out to three hundred, I shot a really nice 100yd group at .280" and shot a horizontal nightmare at 300yds..LOL

My gun(on my bathroom scale) weighs 12.5lbs "ish" with scope and Bi-pod. It fells like a sporter weight 223 recoil wise now, Recoil is less than my last 6BR. Took away all the jump and it still slides back some but very little. If the gun were in a heavier stock I'm sure it would hardly move. I'm happy with it.

The brakes on the below pic are Harrell's. The picture isn't the best and they aren't on Savage's but it's the only picture I have. Anyway, they they sure do the job and are only $30

I dont personally have any brakes yet, but a local smith installs hollands and vias with great results.

I put a Fatbastard on my 338 ultra and I would guess it kicks similiar to my 270WSM.
