Swapping Bolt Head

I am looking at building a 300 WSM on a Savage 12 FV. I bought the gun in a .308 caliber.

Is this the proper bolt head for the 300 WSM? I do not know the difference between a controlled round feed vs others...http://www.midwayusa.com/product/866...ProductFinding

If you use the Controlled round feed bolt head, you'll have to have some machining done to your action to install the standing ejector. Otherwise you won't have a means for ejection. You want the push feed bolt head. You will also need to use the longer WSM firing pin with either. If your firing pin is adjustable, I may be able to help you out with that. I also have the part numbers for the correct bolt head and extractor if you need them. Order your parts from Savage. Use the parts finder to get the correct information. I have serial numbers for WSM based rifles that will allow you to order the parts. Try H743895. Compare part numbers between your serial number for the bolt assembly, you'll easily spot the parts that are different. You'll need to sign a release waiver from Savage to buy the "gunsmith only" parts. Fax it back to them and you're golden.

does it have the cocking indicator at the end of the bolt? (Hollow bolt assembly screw)

11G Firing Pin, Short Heavy Mag 105758 $5.00 (threaded and adjustable)
12J Front Baffle, RH, Heavy Mag 106429 $2.00 (check to see if your rifle already uses this one in the parts finder, if so, you don't need it)
Your extractor will work with the WSM, transfer it to the new bolt head.

Those should be the only parts you will need.
You do not have the Axis style firing pin. If you did, it would protrude into the Allen socket with the bolt removed (cocked) Yours is adjustable and will need to have the protrusion set when you install the new firing pin (search the FAQ)

You also need to verify whether your action is large shank or small shank, to ensure that you get the correct barrel shank size to match your action. Identification tips are also in the FAQ's in the top tab.

Thanks for the advice. I am glad I asked! This takes way more parts than I had thought. I will check with Savage and get these parts on order.
