Threads on barrel shank of Axis

As you can see I'm new. I'm wanting to convert my 308 Axis XP to 7-08 or 260. Most barrels I find are 10-110. Are threads and collar the same as the Axis?

I appreciate that. I emailed Savage a week ago and they haven't responded.

i should have mentioned that the recoil lug is different than the 10/110 series, it will remain in your stock. you will see what i mean.

From looking at prices on good barrels and a new stock it appears I would be cheaper buying another Tikka. Good barrels are around $300.00 as I have found no bargains. Stock around $129.00 shipped and $40.00 to gunsmith. Think I'll take loss and sell Savage and go back to Remington or Tikka.

    So let's see...

New Remington 700 or Tikka T3 = $586 and up
    New Barrel = $300-400+
New Stock = $130 and up

So where's the savings of going to a Remington or Tikka? And lets not forget you'll have $150 or more in gunsmithing fee's to have that new barrel fit to your Remington or Tikka since it's not a DIY job on those guns. Nothing wrong with either gun, but your logic isn't adding up here.

New Tikka rifle 7-08. $525.00 at my store. I've got almost $300.00 in Savage. Do add ons I could have just bought the 7-08 and mounted my scope I already have. Not tikka or rem barrels.

Not sure what you consider "decent", but new custom barrels from ApacheGun Works start at $180.00 shipped. I consider these better than decent, so that could be an extra $120.00 in savings.

I've looked all over for -0 a 260 or 7-08 barrel in stainless. I've seen a few in those prices but they are all labeled varmit contour or v ridge Ect. I don't know if these will fit my gun as I thought it was a sporterbarrel barrel that was on it. Think it's criterion that states their barrels only fit 10-110. 11. Ect. Notes say will not fit axis. I'm a first Savage owner so not even sure which barrels and thickness will fit my axis.

If it's a large shank barrel your looking at, then it's true - it won't fit the Axis. Any small shank savage barrel will fit the Axis providing you open up the barrel channel enough for it to fit in the stock.

Just talked to gunsmith. Forgive quote of $40.00. That's $140.00. Only includes barrel change and headspace. I can live with that if I can ever find decent stainless barrel. I can buy blue and they will strip it and use Teflon color but at a premium price. Saw the ER Shaw barrel in 7-08 and it's blue but good price. Still going to have $700+ in economy rifle just with barrel. Boyd stock $99.00 + funds to make fit and $60.00 more for trigger job. Want at 2.75 lbs. is the barrel that good?

Check out Apache Gun Works. Great value, terrific work. He can start with high end blanks or less expensive ones and, for hunting purposes, probably serve you just as well or better than any other. He has made me quite a few hunting barrels (over a dozen) and they all shoot better than 1 MOA, even large honkers like the 450BM.
