Questions about a build I want to do, youth 250 savage

Well, I've got some stuff gathered up. A savage 10 in 308, accutrigger model; and a gorgeous wood youth stock but its for a stevens 200 or pre-accutrigger model. I tried to mount the 308 barreled action in the stock but looks like trigger opening in the guard is different.

How common are 250 savage (250-3000) barrels and what headspace gauges are used for it? Not wanting to pour a fortune into it because I honestly don't know if my boy will be a hunter, but want something he can use and if he decided not to hunt, I couls use effectively on AR whitetails and coyotes.

I did consider a 223 but not sold on performance on deer. Would rather be more sure and when buck fever sets in my boy, not have to make an extremely precise shot.

I handload so thats not an issue plus a LGS has a couple boxes of remington ammo.

Last I looked (yesterday), Midway had a 250 Savage barrel for $128 :-)

edit: I head spaced mine with a shell case ... of course you could use a 250/3000 head space gauge.

Honestly I'd like to trade into one but my end up going that route. I have a standard profile 308 barrel to trade if a deal I've got going comes through.

Just measured and my stock is only a 4.2 bolt spaced... pretty useless to me.

Outstanding cartridge choice. There is none better for a youth cartridge or hell adult cartridge for that matter. I have a few 250s built with the Adams & Bennet barrels from midway and they are very nice Shooters.

Or you could load up some Nosler 125gr .308 ballistic tips with 38.0 grains of H4895 (Hodgdon youth load) and cut down the stock you have.

Cutting down a stock to fit a youth and re shaping the factory recoil pad to fit is pretty easy and the kid might even want to help :) .
If you have to take a lot off of a synthetic so it will fit (more than 2" or so ) then use some epoxy like JB weld along with a release agent on the recoil pad screws to re build the areas that the screws go into. Doing it this way you can cut a synthetic down a whole lot. I have one I shortened up about 3"-4" to make myself a little carbine/ mountain/ scout/ handy/ youth/ rifle.
Re shaping the recoil pad to fit the shortened stock profile can be done in just a few minutes with a belt sander or a while longer with a file and some sandpaper if you don't mind working at it.
Synthetic may even be lighter than the wood and is darn sure more durable.
Always more than one way to skin a cat so I thought I'd throw it out there for consideration. Good luck

I have seriously been considering that option. I was thinking I could get Leupold mounts and just have two different scope set up for the rifle for individual loads.

I was also considered a multi load adjustable scope like a Leatherwood m1000

I know it's a manufacturers claim, and should probably be taken with salt... and lime..., but Remington claims their reduced recoil ammo (50% recoil reduction) to be within 2" of standard factory loads.

To be honest, other than 22lr I don't buy ammo.

Still rolling around the idea of a 250 savage.

Whats to think about, you wont regret the decision of owning the sweetest 25 around. The ability to shoot 115gr bullets at 2800 plus with less recoil than a .243 is a beautiful thing.
