I see posts all over the internet by a lot of guys who spend too much time sweating the barrel length on rifles such as the 116 Bear Hunter in 300WM convinced they need a 26" tube or a heavy barrel or a dozen other things because of what they have read. They are scared to buy one because it doesn't have some magic combination they read about online. Maybe if they'd spend a little more time shooting and a little less time on charts, graphs and internet lore they would find out just what a quality modern hunting rifle is capable of. Though I enjoy tinkering my Savages as much as the next guy I haven't found one yet that wont respond to the right hand load.
My go to favorite is an old flatback 116FLCSAK in .30-06 just as it came from the factory (trigger adjustment only) that always turns heads with tiny groups and the ability to produce a .30 hole exactly where the crosshairs were when the trigger was pulled. Followed closely in favor by an astoundingly accurate 22" sporter 110 in 25-06 with a rattlecan camo stock.
Good luck with your long range hunting rifle endeavors. :)

I really don't care that my 116FLSAK in 300 WM has a short barrel. No animal in my part of the country is gonna live to tell me I should have hit him with another 100 fps if I do my part. The rifle is certainly up to the task.

    Uhhh.. Mr. Jeep?
I'm afraid that post was entirely too logical, accurate and concise. We'll have none of that here.

I'll need to report this to the moderator.

And I can relate to most everything you said.
'Scuse me while I whip this out...!

We cracked a railroad tie plate with a 270 amped up to 3100-ish. Had shot it many times with 7rm @2870-ish a few times before no issues. I think 3000+fps is just the velocity to do the job.

Hey guys forget the AR500 plate and build your own out of springs from a semi. 250gr SMK's from a 338-06 at 100 yards just makes a nice splat and makes it swing like crazy. Notice it is swinging and not mounted solid. Weld it up solid with 6011 rods cut to the shape you want and have fun.

speed kills. imo 500 is minimum for it. I have 1/2" targets ill shoot my 308 at 300. also having your targets angled down and swinging helps tremendously
