    Convert a Savage 111 in .270

I was given a Savage 111 in .270. The rifle was built in 2000. I am not a hunter. I am interested in converting this to some type of long range rifle with a little less recoil.
    Any ideas?

There are so many choices one can make, it'd be impossible to list them all here. I'll start with a suggestion and you can work off of that. 6x47Lapua.

If you want to go 6mm
    6x47 lapua
    6mm creedmoor
    243

Theres a lot more but that should get you thinking.

"Long range rifle with a little less recoil"... do you mean less recoil than the .270 or just on the lower end of the recoil spectrum? Is availability of components and/or factory ammo a concern? So many different options that "target" and "less recoil" only really start to narrow it down. The .308 based family of cartridges is a good place to start; the .308, 7mm-08, .260, .243 are all easy to shop for, are all pretty tame on the shoulder (even with the mid-range .30 pills in the .308), and most have a pretty solid reputation for being able to be very accurate.

I was considering buying a 6.5 creedmoor or 6.5x284, but since receiving the .270 I figured it would be cheaper to modify than buy new. Whatever I pick, reloading will be done. "Really starting to narrow it down" is where I am now. I am getting back into the game after a 30 year break. I am looking for ideas and advice. I do not mind some recoil. I shot the .270 after being away from the game so long, I guess I forgot what recoil to expect. I also shot a .243 that day and that was really mild. So anything between these two would be OK.

Your 6.5x284 isn't going to really be any different than a 270 IMO. If you want to go between a 243 and a 270 I'd say go 260 or 7-08. Both almost the same cartridge. I've got a 7-08 barrel for my 110 that was a 270. I'd go 7-08 just because it's got better components availability for reloading. If you load it with 160s it'll be very close in feel to the 270. 140s are lighter. I'm guessing that you're are not a reloader. If so, the 7-08 again. You'll find 7-08 ammo more than 260 ammo, at least around here.

I would say .243 because of the availability of components. Just look at what is available wherever you purchase your components. I usually look at midwayusa and cheaperthendirt to see what availability looks like if they don't have it most of the time my LGS doesn't either and they almost always get it back in stock faster then my LGS.
