    5 shot group and 1 flyer every time.. why

    I've tried various loads and at 200yards out of 5 shots 4 will be within a 1/8" of each other or touching , but 1 shot is consistently off by 1/2" or more. yes the barrel is pre shoot and warm . my bullet weights are the same before loading and the overall weight and lenght is checked they are as perfect as i can make them
    using H1000 80.8 gr. with 285gr.BTHP Hornady match Lapua brass.//338 110BA
    Thanks for reading

    How long are you waiting between shots? With the barrel warm, recheck to see if the barrel is still free floating. A warmish barrel may still be making contact somewhere along the barrel channel which won't show up when the barrel is cold.

    How do your groups look with your other guns having less recoil?
    Id be trying some 3 shot groups to see if theres any improvment.
    These things are designed to be long range hammers for hunting, not necessarily
    close range tack drivers. If you can keep 3 shots under an inch @100 yds with that gun be happy
    with yourself and the gun.

    I often get groups like this as well and I have come to the conclusion that it is just me getting inside my own head. Mine always seems to be the 5th shot as well. Its like when I see that little group going I try to hard to make it perfect and yank it somehow.

    I do the same thing. I put my bullseye on black paper now so I can't see the groups during load testing

    Thanks for the quick replies, i will try and answer all questions(cant be later for work) . all shots are within 1 minute of each other as far as free floating i have no idea if it still is I really didn't think that could change so i never checked. less recoil guns all have good grouping that said i have a Winchester model 70 featherweight in 30-06 that kicks like a mule and my groups are really good also.its not that I'm not happy with the grouping at 200yds. i just want it as accurate as i can get it before shooting 1000yds.+ and if I'm doing something wrong with my load work up, and i agree its not a short range rifle you right . sorting the bullets are by weight and length and looking at the very tip for any differences.
    human error, well i try very hard to be mindful of my trigger squeeze every time and the flyer can be at anytime the first shoot or last .... also the powder is carefully measured and rechecked before pressing the bullet in. thanks again for the help

    looks like i need to buy a chronograph, i have no idea
    just so i understand... 80.8 shoots ok but is slow ,81 thru 84.3 bad grouping and slow , if i jump up to 89 thru 91gr. my grouping could tighten up and i could add 300fps +- ? the reason i stopped adding powder was i (assumed ) my grouping would just continue to get worse . long time shooter but a novice at reloading

    Unless you have a heavy varmint weight barrel, I would limit accuracy testing to three shot groups. If you want to stay with five shot groups, wait at least two minutes between shots. Your pushing a large powder charge through that barrel, heat may be your issue.

    In my way of thinking, a chronograph is a MUST. I've been using one for so long now, I can't imagine load development without one. As suggested, try upping you powder charges and let us know how the rifle does.

    There should be low end accuracy and high end accuracy.
