The 243 of the period was part of the 99EG lineup. The .243 caliber was added to the line in late 1955, and made essentially from 1956-60. The EG was the last Savage 99 to have the schnabel forearm. .243 is indeed one of the scarcer calibers, and if it is an EG, that adds about 25% to the value, according to the book. Also, the factory moved the "Savage 99" marking to the left side of the receiver top and provided factory drilled holes for a scope mount. But it is quite important that the wording is on the left, rather than on top... if on top, with holes drilled through the letters, it devastates the value (I wouldn't go near it, personally). Condition is everything, but it might be a fine trade if the condition is similar, and no non factory holes are added. I would sure trade a 300 for a 243, even if I had to pay a bit extra. Lee
