    biggest caliber for savage 110

Basically what I am after is I want to know what it would take to make a 30-378 out of a savage 110 or a large shank savage. I have one but it is in a sako M-995 and the gunsmithing to put the barrel on was $400. And lets face it, if I want to shoot it, I am going to smoke the barrel, if it was on a savage 110 that cost would go away. I have seen some pictures of someone building a 338-378 named "Wrath of God" on a Savage reciever. This is will be a single shot rifle do to the OAL of the round.

From what I can see, the bolt face would need some opening up do to the case diameter, and the port might need to be opened a little. Will the action be ok with a round like that in your opinion? I am betting on alot of NO's but it has been done before.

Well you can buy .458 Win Mag barrel for a 110 so.....

    http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/sid=4...our_1_14_Twist

The guy in his review shoots reduced loads, ~45-70 ballistics or just in case a rouge bull elephant is hiding in his back yard. Elmer Keith didn't think these calibers were well suited for rabbits.

Call the Savage custom shop...and pose the question.

    I built a 338 RUM on a target action....shoots 300 gr SMK's at 2950 fps.

Anybody with quickload care to calculate the pressure?

Ive seen savages built of the same case and yes the bolt head needs to be opened up and those were built on large shank target actions. I make a lot of Rum and edge barrels and those are very big cases also.

Over 88 of Retumbo or H1000. 32" Rock Creek barrel helps a bit as well.

Re: biggest caliber for savage 110

With Retumbo at (Edit 3.6" COL) I got 84K and 2980 fps.
With H1000 it was higher like in the 100k area.

That said QL is not always right.
It has some problems with some cartridges.
Maybe somebody with a later version could run it.

Over 98 of Retumbo or H1000. 32" Rock Creek barrel helps a bit as well.
    98grn in a 338RUM!?!?
a load of 88.5 h1000 is compressed and 90.5 with retumbo is compressed as well; so i'm not sure how you are getting an extra 10gn of powder in there?

On a side note to the original poster: I've built a 338/300RUM (ie Edge) on a savage large shank long action and load 92gn of H1000 under the 300gn SMK. I'm getting 2835fps + or - 12 with that load out of a 30" pac-nor barrel.

Sinman, Have you done anything with the 338 norma's. I was hearing alot about them a few months ago, but nothing as of late. Just curious about the chambering and the difficulty to chamber a savage in one.

Interesting. We are actually getting good case life (better than the Lapua Magnum). Right now, 6-8 loadings per case is the norm. Primers start to get loose at that point. NO hard bolt lift, flattened primers, pierced primers, bulged cases, etc, etc.....

Re: biggest caliber for savage 110

    What is your COL ??

Like I said QL isn't always right.

With cartridges and powders that have been around forever
it is usually right on, like 308, 30-06 and the FPs is very close.

    New powders are sometimes off.
Looks like he does not quite have RL17 right, and I never have been
able to get any decent numbers on the 6.8 SPC.

Short fat cartridges are usually off.
With a 25Wssm my bolt locked when QL said I was at 61K.

Whenever you get into long bullets (especially barnes) and compressed loads QL seems to default to some high safety factor and the pressure ramps up fast.
There is also no section for barrel twist, freebore length, special chambers etc. Just the freebore length can make a pretty big difference since when the primer pops and the bullet lodges in the barrel for a microsecond, the initial powder expansion has more room to expand with a longer freebore so that should give a lower pressure spike.

Obviously if you were running at 100k with your 338 RUM you would have some issues. Some of my old 6.8 spc 110 gr barnes loads were returning
100K with QL, but just from reading brass I would say it was actually running around 60-62K. It was the same load everybody over at
    6.8 forums was running.

Still a good tool and worth the $ IMO.

I am reloading 107 gr of retumbo with 210 gr berger vld bullets. They are comming from a 32" pacnor palma contoured barreled
I havent cryno them with this so I cant give you a good speed. I was hopping to make a 338-378 out of the savage and it would be a little faster then the edge..

Brass availability is a problem. You can shorten 500 Jeffery brass and turn the rim down to .532 but have you priced Jeffery brass lately?
Here is the link to Marty's page. http://www.teppojutsu.com/ go to "products" then Phantom. Marty did a 16.5" barrel for me in '07. I bought his last 175 pieces of brass then. I'm on a waiting list when/if he ever gets any more brass.
