Distance to lands of Savage 10 and 12

    I have reciently bought a Savage 10 PC .223 1:9 twist and a Savage 12 LRPV .223 1:7 twist . I thought I would
sight them both in using Vmax 53gr bullets . I checked the distace to the lands , and found the Model 10 was
2.4190" and the Model 12 was 2.2725" over all length measured with a case with slits cut down the neck sides
and using a digital mic.. I find it strange that the 1:7 twist rifle has a shorter distance to the lands .
Why would Savage do this ? It is going to be difficult to reach the lands with the Model 10 , with bullet
appropriate to it's 1:9 twist and hard to not jam bullets appropriate for the Model 12 with 1:7 twist .
When I measure 80gr Sierra MK's for the Model 12 1:7 twist , the base of the bullet has to be seated below the neck
and into the main body of the .223 case when it is just touching the lands . Does this seem right ?

The throat really doesn't have any tie to the chambering, so in a sense yes it sounds normal. They don't make things one at a time at Savage, it's a mass production with different tools in various States of wear.
Seating to the lands is not a factory goal, that is reloader speak.

How far the bullet sticks in the case isn't really a concern, unless you are only after stuffing ever possible spec of powder in the case.

    Cheers
I'm a firm believer in the theory that if it bleeds, I can kill it.

I have the VLP 1/7 .223 and i found the 80 SMK hits the lands at 2.415 so i load them 2.40 and they shoot good with 24 grains of RL15. The throat does seem kind of short on the savage ,my rem 700 tactical has more room to the lands.
