Small shank Savage, Marlin X7, and even Remington 783 all have the same barrel tenon and thread pitch...BUT, the Marlin and Remington have .010" shorter chambers due to their bolt heads having a .010" deeper face. Therefore they MAY be interchangeable, but you could get a false headspace reading when putting a Savage barrel on the other two actions, because the longer Savage barrel will bottom out against the deeper Marlin and rem bolt faces. Putting a Marlin barrel on a Savage action should be no issue, but unless you are absolutely clear about your headspace being correct, you should take it to a gunsmith before shooting!

Switch barrels are fun, but keep in mind you are setting off an explosion 3" from you eye every time you pull the trigger!!

I agree with Jeff518. He explained it very well.
