    Inletting questions


    I've been lookin around this site for awhile and have just became a member because I've started my first savage build.

    I've used the search button over and over, for the life of me I can't seem to find the answer to my question.

    I'm going to inlet a blind mag stock to the factory bottom metal specs then make my own DBM bottom metal. Before someone says you can buy DBM bottom metal. I am aware of this but no one makes it to the mag I want it to fit. With that said: Is the inletting on the savage stocks in parallel to the reciever? And if it is not parallel what angle is it cut on?

    I know CDI does inletting, but this is something I want to do myself and once I have my jig made I may be able to help out some forum members. I have a CNC machining center and a lathe at my disposal.

    It would seem to me that if you have the capabilities to build the hardware, you would also have the ability to figure out the inlet...

    Sorry, my bad I was under the impression that this forum was about sharing info and helping out new members. I apologize for my mistake.

    I honestly thought if someone knew it wouldn't be that hard to type in an angle. But your right I stand corrected.

    I'm not sure exactly what you mean by "parallel", but you align the DBM frame off the action with guide or stock maker screws. You may have to make two custom screws with slightly oversized shanks for a snug fit in the existing holes. Any slop, your inlet will look like a hatchet job.



    The action should set parallel it's length to the edge of the stock at it max diameter or a red one just above, never below it. If it sets high, low or tilted fore and or aft it should be corrected prior to inletting for the DBM. A few wraps of tape around the barrel near the stock forend will help "level" it out and remove the barrel weight.



    That's about it in a nutshell.

    I truly appreciate the help. I'm sorry if I didn't word it so that I was understood. What I am trying to do is cut the factory inletting for a DBM in a blind mag stocK using a mill. I was wondering if I built a jig that had a round bar the same dia of the reciever with drilled and tapped holes 4.4" apart then welded this bar to a plate that I could put in my vise. This would hold the stock upside down as if it were bolted to a reciever.

    Basically like badger ordinance does in this setup.

    My question was do I cut straight down into the stock leaving my inlet parallel with reciever itself or do I tilt the jig 10 degrees(?) To allow the bottom metal to set on the same angle as the floor of my factory blind mag stock.

    I came up with 10 degrees by measuring from the bottom of the radius where the reciever seats to the bottom of "blind mag box" on both ends and then measuring the length of the "BMB" then some simple trig gave me 10 degrees.

    But with the factory plastic stock these dimensions are crude at best.

    Any help is appreciated

    I don't see how it matters. Cut it deeper than necessary and bed the bottom metal when done. Just make sure the outside/outline/shape of the bottom of the stock is cut to the correct dimensions and, when bedding, make sure the bottom metal is flush with the bottom of the stock. (Why worry about how deep or what angles the well for the mag and bottom metal should be inletted before you even have the bottom metal made?) Ream it deeper than the bottom metal is thick and make it "true" to your bottom metal when you bed it.

    You'll have to match the bottom of the frame to the stock contour while the rest of what's inside is square to the action, much like this escutcheon

    The bore is square to the action( pillar) but its rounded side to side and tapers upward front to rear. The trick, leave it a little proud then contour it to the stock.


    Tape is applied to the bottom of escutcheon and the stock the same amount, the escutcheon secured with the screw then worked down to the tape on the stock. When the tape removed it matches the stock contour. All that's left is the final polishing.

    Thanks guys, I've gotta friend loaning me a factory inletted stock and bottom metal so I hopefully just scan them in and be go from there. Thanks for the replies
