    >223 Rifle Advice

I want to buy a .223 bolt action rifle. I have read good reviews of Savage rifles, but there are a LOT of different models. I need someone to point me toward the right rifle. Here are my requirements:

    .223 Caliber
Very accurate rifle for varmit hunting and target shooting at 100 yards (occasionally to 200 yards)
    Will be mounting a scope
I want a dependable, reliable rifle
Price should be under $500 on the street

Thank you for any advice you can offer me.

Yep that sounds like a good answer. Shop around but the Hog Hunter would do everything you asked for.

I need a second choice. I just can't stand "GREEN" guns. Any other stock/metal finish is fine, but I could not find this same gun in any other finish. I appreciate your help.

Go to Walmart. They usually have a 10FP in either .223 or .308 in the case. These are usually fine shooters right out of the box, very reliable, and excellent platforms to build a custom rifle on if you decide you want to do that later.

Ever hear of Aluma-Hyde from Brownell's?

Even a can of Rust Oleum in flat will do wonders on that Hog Hunter stock. A good step up from that would be Duracoat or a wood stock from Boyds.

I feel like I am asking for advice and then ignoring it. Sorry guys, I don't want to buy a new gun and then paint it.

    Boudin,

I cannot find a 10FP on the Savage site anywhere. In fact, I read that it has been discontinued. Is there a new model number?

In that price range, you can't be picky by demanding caliber, accuracy, and color.

Paint the hog hunter. You will be pleased.

I think maybe they changed the letter designation to fxp or something like that. I'll read the tag when I go in there int the next day or two. There's always one or two in the spinning glass case. It's the base model 10.

For a few more bucks you can get a Model 25 Walking Varminter in .223 Rem.

We have a Model 25 Varminter in .222 Rem and it is lights out accurate. I'm sure the .223 Rem is also.

I'd still lean toward the Model 11 Hog Hunter. In the long run the action is more versatile.

    Boudin,
You are. You're not the first.
Buy the hog hunter. I will paint it for you.

    ^^^^^ +1 LOL

What's wrong with buying a new gun and painting or or Duracoating it? Many new guns are Duracoated at the factory these days before being sent to the distributors. Nothing cheap about that.

Don't get me wrong. I appreciate the advice. I will definitely reconsider the Hog Hunter. Too many of you have recommended it for me to ignore it. Thank you for your time and your replies.

I like a nice wood stock too but bought the Hog Hunter on sale. It's a great rifle for the price & for what you save you can add a Boyd's stock.
