Easy if you reload get the 30-06, if you don't then the 308, there is no match in 30-06 ammo only in 308.

Hi all I'm new to rifles and looking for some advise. I'm looking to get a Axis for long distance target shooting. I'm not sure what caliber to get 308 or 30-06. Thanks in advance for all the help

RUMs are like woman in Stiletto heals, you know they are going to put you in the poor house, but that has never stopped anyone from pursuing them.
I'd suggest you cut your teeth on a .223, and master short range first.

I like the 308. If I wasn't shooting F class I would consider the 06 and I were hooked on 30 cal.. The 308 holds it's own until you get up to the 180-190 class bullets. The extra powder starts to shine from there on up.
I recently started playing with he 223 sharpshooter brings up. What fun it is. My shoulder doesn't hurt after 70+ rounds. I set some personal best scores in mid-range and its much cheaper to shoot.
If I was looking into banging steel out to 1000 and beyond there are many calibers I would pick over the 06, one being the 6.5 swede. But you didn't ask about that.
