    quick hedspace question

So I've rebarreled my savage 30-06. I threaded my barrel on to the bolt with the go gauge in the chamber but when I tighten the lug the barrel turns with it reducing the headspace. I've had to turn out the barrel to time the lug torque with the barrel. The bolt closes with the go gauge but when I try it with the no-go it doesnt close but the bolt almost closes. It goes past the initial "click" but not all the way shut. Is this still ok?

You are good if it does not close. You may not be optimal but definitely safe. If only there was a way to hold the barrel and the action at he same time. : )

If not you can always is a strap wrench one that is made with the rubber. Hold the barrel in place as you tighten up the locking collar and recoil lug in place, then you should be able to get your headspace that you need for go/no go
