    Should I be worried.

This past weekend I took my late father in law's Savage 99 out and sighted in the iron sights. Started with some Winchester Supreme 168 gr in 308. No problems. Loaded 5 rounds of some older ammo of his .First two rounds no problem.Third round huge boom and recoil I am still feeling. Last two rounds sounded louder but no increase recoil. I realize I shouldn't have shot the last two rounds. Upon looking at the third case I saw a rupture near the base of the cartridge. I looked over the rifle saw no cracks or bulging.Should I stop using the rifle ?Just stick to newer ammo?

Did your father in law reload?

Sounds like a couple hot loads you put through it.

Stick to the factory stuff and you'll be alright.

I believe you are describing a case head separation probably caused by sizing the brass to short at the shoulder. There is a solution if you are a hand loader. Follow Mad Dogs advice.

I would recommend having it looked at by a gunsmith just to be on the safe side. Most won't charge much to look one over just to make sure everything is up to snuff and as it should be. Problem is finding a smith that's ever seen or worked on a Model 99 these days.

    Man that primer looks flat.

The link you provided has a couple of features that allow you to magnify the image pretty good. The finish on the case indicates to me that it is a possibly a reload. Like JBaker said, let a smith look it over for your sake and destroy the remainder of that older ammo.

When you click the "Share Photo" button on flickr, you need to click the BB Code option to get the right code and select 640x450 as your thumbnail size.

I don't use it at all. Not sure why they force you to use a URL code with thumbnail rather than simply doing the IMG code and embedding the pic full size. Guess they want that link back traffic to their site/service.
