Not sure I'll convert my '06 to anything, but I plan on using my 243 this year. The '06 has dropped them with authority, but might be overkill. Never gotten a deer with my 243, but had the rifle for many years, so it's time to try.

Got some 95gr Partitions loaded up to check accuracy. I think a 25-06 is probably gonna be a round that stands toe to toe with a 270, for deer.

Over the years, I've gotten excellent accuracy and performance using the Hornady 87 grain HP on our Georgia deer. I neck shoot so it's always "bang flop" with that bullet and it will hold a 1" group out to 200 yards. I've even used a Hornady 60 grain HP in a 223 Rem and the deer never went farther than 15 yards after being hit from about 50 yards out. It's not something I would recommend doing routinely but, I was curious if the 60 grain would do the job on our smallish does.

I know a land owner that regularly shoots deer on his property with a 22LR and does lung shots. Shots are within 40yds and the deer will move about 20yds and stand there about 5 min and drop. Not arguing legality or ethics but the fact is, a 223 puts a similar weight bullet far deeper into the lungs, and with much more tissue damage, and I have little doubt about it's ability.

Our deer here are not very large, even though they are mulies. I shot a big one, 2 years ago, and he was about 200lbs on the hoof. Of course the '06 anchored him, shot him in his bed at about 50yds with a offhand lung shot.

Been VERY fortunate these last 4 years, have a neighbor that lets me hunt his 160 parcel. He's talking of selling now . I hope, for my sake it takes a while. Public land is always crowded.

Wow that's stretching out there. Pretty sure that's past my usable range.

Don't ask how I know, but I do know in 1974 there was a doe in West Germany that verified a 223 cal (non expanding) bullet will indeed drop them in their tracks. Of course there was one pissed of Colonel and one embarrassed Captain that saw our mascot (a hugely obese golden retriever) dragging the does hide in front of them during a surprise inspection one day.

    Ahhhh memories.
