    Magnum Contour

    Who's runnnin magnum contour barrels?
Do you like it? How's the weight? Barrel heat up much? Light enough to hunt with?
Thinking of getting one in 300wm, thinking it mite be a good long range hunting contour.
    Thoughts, experiences or opinions wanted!

I really like the shilen #5 contour for my serious long range hunting rigs. Very similar to the contour offered on the long range hunter. Heavy enough to ensure accuracy for extended strings of fire and not to heavy to pack around.

I'm not familiar with that contour, but it sounds about what I'm looking for. Do you happen to know if is heavier or lighter than the magnum?
Is that contour available for savage pre-fits? I guess Jim at Apache could probably make any contour i wanted....

I have a Savage 116 FLSAK in 300 WinMag that has the factory Magnum Profile fluted barrel. I'll say it's more accurate than a sporter weight barrel by a long shot. Savage started making these about the same time as the Remington Sendero was starting to become popular. I packed mine throughout Hell's Canyon elk hunting and never had any complaints about the weight of the rifle. Don't notice it heating up much, but who's gonna run 20 rounds of 300 Win down the tube in one sitting?

Thanks, glad to hear it wasn't too heavy for that kind of huntin.
Looks like the shilen 5 is a little heavier than a magnum

    Thanks, that looks great!
are you happy with the weight/stiffness of the barrel? Is this a hunting rifle?
The contour looks close to a Sendero

It is my deer/elk/whatever gets in the way gun. been really happy with the weight/stiffness and accuracy <1/2 MOA. Slightly lighter than Sendero but heavier than Savage magnum

I have a factory savage fluted magnum contour that was re-chambered in 338 edge.
    LOVE IT............I call her Veera.
First 1/4moa rifle I owned, still my favorite and my go to gun.

Is a factory savage magnum the same as a mcgowan or other savage prefit magnum contour?
    Arround .685" at the muzzle?

That's really good to know that even with flutes and a big ol 33cal hole it's still stiff enough to shoot 1/4 MOA

The 300 WinMag is capable of the same accuracy from my 116FLSAK. It was running at about 1/2MOA before I bedded the action, and tightened the groups up considerably from there. Muzzle diameter at the brake is .750

    Great! Thanks!
Getting to hear the actual muzzle diameters is really helpful, because one companies "varmint" may be equal to another companies "light target" or #4,5,6 etc.
I'm leaning towards under .70" at the muzzle if I go without flutes, and over .70" if I have it fluted.
What you guys think? Sound about right for a rugged terrain long range hunting barrel?

I believe that Savage marketed my 116 as having a Heavy Magnum contour. I'd have to go look it up in the catalog tho to be sure.

Ya, "heavy magnum" sounds about right if it's .75 at the muzzle. It's probably very similar to the shilen #5 the guys were talking about earlier in the thread.
Mcgowan list their "magnum" as .685.
I'm not opposed to the .70-.75 range, I would just want it fluted like yours to cut down on weight

I am running an ER Shaw 300 win mag magnum contour. Light enough to hunt with but heavy enough where it does not over heat quickly at the range. It also has a moa of .141 at 100 yards.

I run an ER Shaw 7mm Rem Mag magnum contour on one rifle, and I can't get it to shoot under an inch, no matter what I feed it. It hits consistently at 800 yards with 150gr BT's, but its a pretty good-sized steel target. It doesn't feel well balanced with the Tupperware stock, but isn't too bad for hunting all day with.

I also have an ER Shaw 338-06 magnum contour on another rifle. It's pretty stout, with a laminated stock on it, but it balances much better than the 7mm. That barrel is kind of strange. No matter what bullet I try, as long as I have a max load of whatever powder, it is going to group well. Come down 0.5-1.0 grains and the groups open up to 2+ inches.

I'm running a McGowen barrel with a Shilen 5.5 contour on my 6.5-06. It is an excellent weight for my hunting duties, and shoots really good also.

Heavier contours do not mean more accurate rifles. They simply help prevent barrel whip and barrel heat up. I have seen manykreigers, criterions, and in pencil barrels shoot extremely well for a 3-5 shot group. But then things go down hill fast as the barrel heated up. If this a dedicated hunting rig where distances are under 600 yards I think contour is not too much of a concern. If you will be shooting at the range OR hunting at distances where several sighters shots may be needed, then I'd say go for heavy.

Change the tupperware stock or bed it and I bet your groups get tighter.
