    Chassis Build for Striker

I recently picked up another Striker and decided that this one was going to be a bit different. So I decided to build a chassis stock out of aluminum for it. It is still a work in progress, but here is what I got done today. (sorry for the crappy cell phone pics)

Here it is getting started in the vertical CNC mill.

Here it has had the trigger and mag wells cut into it.

Now with the barrel channel cut into it. It should have plenty of room to free float.

And here it is with all the bedding area cut in, bolt handle notch cut, and the sear clearance cut into it.

That is as far as I got today as I ran out of time. I did manage to get most of the rest of the programs laid out in the CAD program to do the lower side so that will have to wait until next Saturday. I'll keep adding pics and info as I progress.

    Thanks for looking.

Looks good. Do you have any drawn out plans yet for the fore end and grip?

I am going to make the fore end with just a flat bottom. I am going to drill and tap a hole in the bottom for a sling stud to thread into for bipod use. I am also planning to drill and tap a pair of holes to have a removable plate that is 3" wide by maybe 6" to be able to use with a bench rest.

As for a grip, I am going to be milling in a AR-15 style grip receiver to be able to use AR grips.

I have a lot of material to remove yet. I had to start with a 2in by 5in block as it was the most suitable we had on hand. If I ever do another one I am going to start with something like 2x3.5 or so to save some time.

It will probably have to wait until next Saturday unfortunately but, for near free machine time you gotta do it when the boss lets ya.

Thanks for all the replies guys.

I am going to keep this one pretty plain-Jane but, I have already started looking at getting a tap for using the AR rear stock/buffer tube assemblies and doing one for a rifle. First things first, wait and see who this one turns out. :)

When you get the rifle portion figured out, let me know. I may be able to provide the material, for a modest fee...........

I knew somebody would say that. LOL.

Per site rules I am not allowed to sell these here because I am not a site sponsor. I may have to become one though if I get this figured out and running smooth.

I'm not buying anything here, lol.
But I do have a 3x3x75" piece of 6061-T6511 at my disposal.

Ahh 10-4. Sorry misunderstood your earlier comment. Every time I post up one of these types of DIY projects I worry that the Mods will get upset if someone asks me to build them one. you've been around here long enough to have seen that before.

I may just take you up on that offer.

Yup figured I would cut most of the extra off.

for milling "bits" I am using a 1/4" Carbide 3-flute endmill for the finish milling on the pockets and channel. A 7/8" 2-flute endmill for the roughing operations, and a 3/4" ball endmill for the contouring operation of the action bedding surface.

Well I got it pretty much finished up today. Still have to paint it and drill-tap for a sling stud, but it is together and usable and came out fairly good. Heck of a lot cheaper than buying one, LOL.

Pics later tonight or tomorrow morning.

Love to see it. Did you mill the bottom for a mag system.

Nope. Since this is going to be a rear grip, I decided to keep it a blind mag for now, but I left it setup so I could add a DBM setup later if I wanted. I converted it to use a regular rifle trigger setup, and then swapped out the shorter Striker blind mag for a regular depth rifle magazine.

This one is really just a prototype for now. I've kept it basic and simple. I wanted something a tad different for this Striker, and building this is paving the way for me to build a rifle setup a ways down the road.

Here are some pics of it with the grip and action installed. I have not choose a barrel yet. Thinking maybe a 6x45AI or something on that line for target work and varmints. Heavy barrel should have no issues free floating in this thing. I still have to paint it and might change the contour of the very tip of the fore end. Gotta drill and tap it for a sling stud for using a bipod. Otherwise ready to go.

Just for those wondering, the length of the barrel channel is 9.875" and 1.5" wide. Bottom of fore end is 2" wide. OAL without barrel is just over 20".

Thinking about adding a little frill and dressing to it. It seems to be very functional as is, but the "plainness" is starting to get to me,

Great work. A little paint on it and you will be good to go. I would not try to church it up. Looks good and functional as is.
