    Barrel for Sav. 116

I'm going to buy a barrel from an individual. How do I tell if my Savage 116 is large or small shank(?) and how large of a diameter does the barrel need to be for threading to fit my action? Thanks, Paul

If it is not a Short Mag (7mm short mag, .270 short mag, etc) it should be standard/small shank. The short mags were/are made on large shank I believe.

If your barrel looks like the one on the right, it is a large shank.

I've seen Ultra Mags with large shanks, and I believe a factory 338 also. They're not just on WSM's.

I appreciate the responses. My Sav. 116 was a 7mm Rem. Mag. originally. I guess it's not as simple as : s/n xxxxxxx to s/n xxxxxx had a lg. shank, etc. This one is a stainless, synthetic (plastic) stocked 7mag. It's the old style, top bolt release and regular trigger. On a barrel mfg site it shows 3 different length barrel threads. So am I correct about the lg. vs sm. shank is diameter or is it the thread length or both? Thanks Paul

The large and small shank barrels have a different thread diameter. Standard barrel shank diameter on standard calibers are 1.055" x 20tpi. On the WSM, RUM, and SAUM calibers the shank diameter is 1.120" x 20tpi. The barrel nut is also bigger in internal size, but is the same outside diameter. By your description of the rifle you can count on it being a small shank.

Thanks Mr. Olds, The build that I've been working on for a year+ is progressing, I've done a few fireformed cases. This is a used 32" stainless, 5R barrel, that's going to be cut and re-threaded. Thanks again Olds, Paul P.S. how's the car?

My brother owns it now. I replaced it with a 1979 Z28 like the one I had right out of high school. Only this one is a little faster....

The difference between men and boys is the price/size/kind (pick one) of their toys.
