    220 swift

contemplating putting a Mcgowen Prefit barrel on a 110 action chambered for 220 Swift.
Just wanting to hear from someone that's done it, and what the best twist rate might be for that caliber.
    thanks

I have an 8 twist 220 swift for shooting heavier bullets. Depends if you want to shoot light bullets fast or heavy bullets kinda fast.

Im pretty sure she would be shooting mostly the lighter bullets, so I'm kinda teetering between the 12 and 14 twist

I have a 14 and 16 twist, and I could not choose between the two, I have since Ackley Improved them, and as much as I thought how much difference can it make, well I was wrong, come tax season I will be getting a 12 twist.

Well i wouldnt be leaning toward anything till you decide on what you will be using it for most.
My own experience using swifts for varmit hunting goes back about 60 years. Frankly i was never
impressed with the gun which was a venerable model 70. No doubt available bullets at the time
hobbled the performance of the cartridge. With todays bullet selection the swift can be one of the
best performers in the factory chamber 22 cal lineup and arguably the best. The case capacity is
such that its begging to be used with the heavier bullets for best long range performance.
Anybody who thinks 50/55 gr bullets are as good as 69/75 gr bullets hitting 600 yd prairie dogs
on windy days has never tried it. Thats where the swift will shine the brightest but only with the correct twist barrel.
I have a 9 twist on an a i version 22/250 which is a close rival to the swift. It handles 69 gr smks very well and also
55 gr bullets. Ive not tried heavier ones in that gun but its doubtfull they would shoot as well.
On the other hand if your goal is to peg the dial on your chronagraph then the 12 twist and 40 gr bullets might be the ticket for you.

Thanks for the reply. I was Thinking of The 55 gr as the standard, but it is for someone else, so I still have to find what they
Will use it for. At this point in their shooting I don't
Think they will be going for the 600 yd prairie dog so an all around twist that could handle a
Variety of bullets may be best. And don't ask why the 220 swift then. When you want a certain cartridge, no other will suffice until you have one. And that is what they want.

Mine is a 1:14 and won't handle much above 55, but shoots very well with 50-53. A 1:12 might shoot all of those well......
