I have my dad's old model 58 and would like to put it back into sevrice for spring turkey season. It says proof chambered 2 3/4. A local smith said it could handle 3 inch. Just looking for a second opinion. Thanks

I think it could handle the pressure but when it opens it expands past the chamber and the shot load is forced through that in the barrel, not good at all.
Plus once a 3" shell expands after shooting it might not eject either because it will be longer than the ejection port most likely.
Can't believe a smith would tell you it was fine???????
Savage- "never say never".

You will most likely have a fail to eject issue at least.
