Anyone hear of see the new 45 Raptor?

Hearing people talk about the 45 raptor..described as a 308 case cut off at the neck and stuffed with a 45 bullet....designed for an AR 308 platform it seems to be within the legal limits for the new Michigan straight walled pistol cartridge for deer hunting in southern Michigan....Dean or Fox???

450 Bushmaster IMHO seems to have the advantage. Factory ammo available if needed. And from what you guys have told me about the So-MI deer hunting cartridge limits its legal for that too. Being based on the 284 case over the 308 case should give the powder capacity advantage to the 450.

I would like to hear why the Raptor is the hot new thing though.

I don't even know that the Raptor is the "new hot thing" Boots! Just saw someone talking about it is all. Honestly, I am planning to buy a lever gun in 45LC or 41 Mag for my straight walled So-MI cartridge...although I could easily just use my 44 Mag...hahah

I was told about it a while back. I'm going to build one up on a Mauser. Looks like you can use a 460 S&W reamer and dies. Cut down brass should be almost free. Throw in some hard cast bullets. Should be a nice loud thumper.

I'd be interested in hearing how that works out. I've got a Mauser 98 (Czech Action) that's chambered in 444 Marlin. It's a hoot to play with on the range but is not practical as a hunting rifle because it has a bull barrel. I enjoy knocking down the steel pigs at 300 yards with a 240gr XTP handload at 2380 fps.

The 44 auto mag was the same but shorter. This thing sounds like a 44 automag super mag. Its a gimmick.
Willing to give back for what the sport has done for me!

I like the idea. Then someone can cut off a 30-06 and put a 45 in the end. Now you have something close to a 45-70 without having to have a bolt head modified and a cone on the breech end of the barrel to shoot it in a bolt gun. Then we could get us a 45 WSM, Then a 45 WSSM. Hehe.

All kidding aside, all of this playing around with wildcats is awesome. If you have the money and the desire, do it.

There is some bad information going around about the 45 Raptor. It is NOT made off of a 308 case. The parent case is a 460 S&W with the rim rebated to .470. The only thing the Raptor and the 308 have in common is the case head size.

I have been questioning the use of the 308 case since the 450BM uses the 284Win case with its larger body diameter and the fact that the 44 Automag uses cut down 308's using a .430" bullet. And to get the .430" bullets to fit the 308 brass you have to neck ream the brass, so getting a .452" in a 308 case is not practical in the least.

There was one where a guy was doing a 44 on a cut down 06 case. Don't remember a 45.

What you guys are describing with the '06 brass can easily be accomplished with the 458 Win Mag. It even works in a Savage standard long action. Factory ammo, ready made barrels, why re-invent the wheel?

Oh yes, and bullet selection in the .458 dia is WAY better than for the 44.

    45 Raptor

My experience with the Raptor so far has been very good compared to the 450 BM and 458 Socom. Using 460 S&W data for loading it has produced very good accuracy out to 200 yards. For deer, I probably wouldn't push it much further, but that's me. Most of the 450's that have come across my bench have had feeding and accuracy issues. I know there's those that will have their own experiences but the 45 Raptor has not given me any of these issues thus far. Velocity is good out of a 16" barrel. Would like to have a 20" to test. Just like my 460 S&W, whatever it hits it hurts.

I went one better. I had a barrel made for the 450 in a DPMS pattern for an LAR 10. I can use off the shelf 450 ammo as well as reloaded using 460 data. The case capacities are almost identical. It runs like a champ and has ballistics that match the Raptor.
My next project is going to be a 450 in a Savage. It should feed well out of the Savage bolt action. I plan on using a model 12 stager feed action for this one.

Interesting cartridge but for hogs a 450 BM will work just as well and ammo is $26 a box.

Was going to build an AR15 in 450 BM but decided to go the odd route with a middle bore with less recoil via the 358 Gremlin.
This is primarily to be my night hunting hog rifle so the intent was a heavy hitter with quick follow up.

Actually right now I am building a 450 BM on a mauser action.

Rhineland Arms sells a 45 ACP mauser barrel conversion kit with a 16" barrel with a barrel nut but I could not get 45 ACP to feed on my intermediate action so I am going to ream the barrel to 450 BM. Will have peep sight and a scout scope mount in a boyds stock.
