do i have to re sight in after removing a stock

painted my original axis stock over the weekend and took it off the barrel, after doing so I was told I would have to re sight in because I removed the stock, is this true? the gun was shooting 1/2 inch at 100 will it be a lot off to were I couldn't hunt with it?

You absolutely do need to re-zero your rifle after taking the action out of the stock for any reason at all. It may not require anything more than a few "clicks" in elevation or windage, but things change whenever you separate the components from one-another: stock from action; scope mounts from action; scope rings from scope mounts. If you disturb the relationship between any of them, you need to verify that your POA and POI are still the same as before the "disturbance!"

Make sure you torque the action screws about the same as they were before disassembly. That won't reestablish the previous zero, but it will help to keep the group size consistent.

I always shoot at least three rounds to let things settle before making any adjustments as well.

One needs a bunch of trigger time anyway, so checking zero after any work on the rifle and periodically throughout the shooting year is both prudent and develops better shooting skills.
