    Bolt Material


    Fellas,

    Can anyone tell what material the savage bolt is made from...the tube itself?

    There is many different materials used in the bolts many different parts. What part of the bolt are you asking about, I am guessing the bolt body, by your question of the "tube."

    1020 tube, carbo-nitrided to R15N to a depth of .012" - .015"

    For those that don't know, 1020 is a low carbon plain good machining steel with .020% carbon as th only alloy element. For comparison, 1095 is high carbon like in razor blades. R15n is the Rockwell hardness number and carbo nitride is the process that gets the depth of harness to the .012-.015 depth. At least that is what it was when I was young.

    PS: low carbon steel doesnt harden under heat treating, Hi-carbon will. The carbo-nitriding gives the low carbon steel a hard skin with a tough interior.
