2 bolt, 3 bolt receiver new guy question

Hello. I am new to this site and planning on putting together a savage. I currently do not own one but trying to get my ducks in a row. I have seen on here guys talking about a 2 bolt and 3 bolt receive. My questions are what is the difference, how do i tell which is which and is one better for a build over the other? Thanks.

2 bolt = repeater, can be large or small shank
3 bolt = target action single shot, these are large shank actions
