    What grain bullet?

I just purchased a Savage 10P SR with 5 R rifling and a 1:10 twist, and a 20" barrel. My question is what grain bullet would be recommended
for this setup? I have read conflicting information regarding what is the best grain to run through this setup.

What range are you planning to shoot at? For the shorter ranges up to 300 yards the 150gr SMK will do fine. Out to 600 or 700 yards, the 168 gr SMK does well. Out to 1k, consider the 175gr SMK or Hornady 178 gr A-Max. Pretty much it will depend on what your rifle likes.

I used Match Grade BTHP's 168grs-178grs with IMR 4064 and CCI#200 primers in everything from Lake City to Lapua Brass and all were Sub 1/2MOA capable at 100yds, but for 100-1000 my favorite was the Hornady 178gr BTHP. Supposedly it has a slightly higher BC then the AMAX, but I think you're really just splitting hairs at that point. I do feel it performed better than the 175SMK and 175 Custom Comp though in my experience of just under 1500 rounds before I sold the barrel.

300 yards is my max only because that is the max distance my club offers.

LoneWolf, great info, thanks. I will be sure to file this away for future reference. I am a big fan on Lake City brass.

If you have a good barrel the 308 is rather forgiving in my experience. I was running a 26" 10 twist Varmint contour from McGowen. So the only advantage I really had is some extra velocity.

Honestly, for 300 yard max; unless you find otherwise, I would NOT shoot a boattail bullet.
Most BPR shooters don't as the potential for accuracy is higher with a flat base, since the bullets won't need to "go to sleep". You may find that your techniques and conditions don't preclude the very long match bullets, but I wouldn't start with them.

Drops to Approx 500 yards will be essentially negligible between the two types.
I'm a firm believer in the theory that if it bleeds, I can kill it.

In the .308 I'd really like to see a 150-170 flat base target bullets, and in .223 70-80 grain flat base target bullets.
There really is an excuse for everything!

My 308 shoots the best with 125 gr Ballistic Tips. Every barrel's different. Try as many combinations as you can,you never know what you'll end up with.
