    question for 338 edge expert

Shot my 338 edge at lunch today for the first time. shout out to Jim at Apache for the workmanship it is great.

    shot 6 rounds, 91 gr retumbo with 250 berger hybrid @ 3.79 " oal(.02 off lands) , 1-10 twist 26" and 1" brake

zero pressure signs, nothing on primer, no extractor marks, soft bolt lift ect. Chrony said 2725 FPS

As i'm new to the cartridge, do any of you have any advice or personal experience with a similar recipe? I was planning on adding powder a grain at a time until i hit pressure or a node. then mess with seating depth.

I know 338 cal is a whole different animal thought id ask for some guidance

    thanks in advance

Even with a full case of Retumbo or 102gr and a 250gr bullet, you will never see any signs of pressure, although you will be on the north side of 3000 FPS.

I haven't shot the 250 grain pills out of the edge. I do shoot plenty of the 300 grain though with 92 grains of H-1000 out of a 30" barrel @ 2825FPS.

The most knowledgeable experts that I know of concerning the Edge hang out at http://www.longrangehunting.com/forums/ You should be able to find out a lot of info there too.

Just use 338 RUM load data as a baseline, and then just take advantage of the extra case capacity.
if ever you want to belong to an exclusive club, don't forget they 100gr+ of RL17 with Barnes 160gr TTSXs 4000 FPS +, it turns that edge into a Varmint rifle, it comes in handy when you can't decide between the Swift or they Edge.

Wow I'm really excited, thanks dean. That's why I used slow powder with a light pill figured I would be less like let to hit pressure.

92.5 grains of Retumbo behind a 300 Berger, .050 off

    102.5 RL17 behind a Barnes xxx 160 grain

Very accurate and destructive with either bullet.

I think Dennis meant 102.5 of RL17, for those 160gr Barnes not Retumbo.

If you cannot find the 160gr TTSXs the 185gr ones are also a blast, with a little less of RL17 or a full case of RL19.

ok i have some H1000 ill try. i like the luxery of putting as much powder as i can cram without having to worry about pressure! H 1000 would hit max presure before compression i would think? possibly slightly higher velocity?

Yes you can go to town with the H1000, with no pressure signs, and yes on the FPS

I can't remember the last time I shot my 22-250 since Dean turned me on to the 338 Edge with the 160's.

I look forward to shooting it. It will destroy our pesty swamp critters down here.

The bad part is I really don't have anything to shoot it at here that I can decimate with it. lol I need prairie dogs, dangit. My buddy wants me to take it deer hunting and only take head shots. Haha

Stupid 160gr load, let me tell you after firing a few shots off with that load, you will be on your hands and knees saying "I'm not worthy" LOL

I may have missed it but what brand barrel was it that Jim cambered for you? Is this one of the new X-Caliber barrels? 10 twist I imagine. What length? brake? How about a pic of the gun? How many grooves in the barrel?

Good shooting. Got to love the Edge! I got a 30" Pac-Nor on mine with their 3 groove and love it!

Nice Rig, the Purple is a little to Gay for me, but still nice Rig, LOL

    Dean

PS: The RUM case can hold 100+ grains of powder, use all of it.
