    Barrel replacement

I have a Savage Model 12 Palma. I would like to purchase two replacement barrels from other vendors. One in .308 and the other in .260 Remington. I would like the stock contour to be the same. Does anyone know what that exactly is?

Different vendors call their barrel contours slightly different names sometimes. I'd go to the maker's website you intend to buy from and take measurements of your own barrel, so you can match it up and get exactly what you want.

That's easy enough to do. I see some barrels are called prefit, however even there are differences.

I'm thinking that "prefit" means that the barrel is threaded for a specific action and makes no reference to contour.
Or was that even a concern?

The prefit designation just means it is chambered and threaded for a specific action. It won't reference contour.

So even if I buy a prefit I'll need to have it contoured. I guess i'll need to find someone near SC.

A prefit should come contoured, or else it would have to be a straight bull. Most prefits are going to come in the most common contours.

For instance, on the McGowen website this 260 prefit barrel comes in the Varmint contour: http://mcgowenbarrel.com/?product=24-savage-prefit-2

This page on the McGowen website is great for determining contours of different manufacturers: http://mcgowenbarrel.com/?page_id=5194

I have no stock in McGowen and don't even own a barrel from them, I just find their website has one of the best explanations and charts.

If whoever you're buying a prefit barrel from doesn't offer that caliber in the contour you want you can usually specify the contour for a slight charge.

What vendor are you looking at?

By the way, I'm in the lowcountry for the time being if you don't have the barrel nut wrench and action wrench.

Visit one of the barrel maker's sites like http://pac-nor.com/ and you will see useful discussions for contours and which chambers are available. The .308 and 260 are both common enough that the price will be among the lowest each manufacturers offer.

BTW My .20 Grendel barrel was made by Pac-Nor and mounting it on the action was as straightforward as others have indicated.

Pre-Fit Barrels are ready to go, just pick your finish, Matte or Polished.

They come Contoured, Chambered, Threaded, and Crowned per your specifications.

Unscrew your barrel and install the Pre-Fit using your go-No go gauges and you should be ready to go.

    Any questions, just PM me.
