    threading barrels

Greeting from the snow day capital of the world!

I just sent out paperwork for my 2nd suppressor. I quick visual audit of my harem of rifles was very disturbing, I have only 1, yes 1 rifle with threaded barrel.
I want to thread the barrels for the suppressor quick attach mount thingy (technical term).

    1. What does it cost to get a barrel threaded?
    2. what is the minimum OD that I need to be able to thread a barrel

    Barrel threading is generally $75-$100.

The minimum OD is relative to what size threads are needed.

    clintsrv,

that is what I am confused about,
you can get adapters with different thread pitch/size

I bought a 5/8 24 adapter. but these puppies are $200 a piece, with the 5/8 24 adapter what is the minimum barrel contour I can get threaded?

"C" if the muzzle OD, and from this chart the minimum I can thread is a sporter contour?

I believe for 5/8x24 around .625 would be minimum to still have a shoulder.

I have purchased 1/2x28 to 5/8x24 adapters for around $30-$35. I use a 30 cal. can on everything.

If you talk to your guy who does the threading ask about a bulk price.
My smith charges $100 per each, but I got 4 done for $50 each, so it never hurts to ask if he will do a deal.
I also removed them myself since they were Savage & AR15 rigs
.685" is the smallest my smith will do with a 5/8x24 thread.

The major diameter of 5/8-24-RH threads is .625", so you will need more than that to have any kind of a shoulder. 5spd's recommendation of .685" is probably a bare minimum IMHO. That's only .030" of material on each side to shoulder on. My personal preference is a bit more "meat" for the shoulder than that.

Depending on your caliber, you could get 9/16-24-RH threads done, or even 1/2-28-RH if its a .224" caliber. These are all just my observations and opinions, but I am basing them on my 10 years of manual and CNC machining experience, so take all that for what its worth.

Get ahold of Jim down at www.apachegunworks.com and ask him his thoughts and see what he would charge you to thread your barrels. He does great work and is a great guy to talk to.

Thanks guys, that is exactly what I was confused about.
Clint, adapter is a great idea, I will have to get one, which one did you get and from where?
5spd and boots, I will seek out a volume pricing for the threading job and give Apache a ping (his website says Dec he will take orders again).
I called a local gunsmith, the lady wanted $150 for threading, I nearly fell off my chair.
I will make sure I have min OD of .685"

The wonderful world of eBay provided the adapter. Just search for 5/8x24 thread adapter, seller is ffl123_com.

.685" is the minimum to go with.

This is an interesting topic. The wife got me a Axis in .308 for my birthday. Plans were for a can when I can afford it, but I recall the barrel OD, but it isn't very fat. Looks like a sporter contour. Now I have to get it out and look at it. May have to give ER Shaw a call.

If you face your brake/hider/adaptor up against the muzzle the od is not as big of a deal. It wont look as clean but it will still work.
