    Axis Questions

Is the Axis one action length for all calibers or is there a short and long action ?

Are all the bolt heads the same ? IE like going from 223 to 30-06 to 7mm mag for a switch barrel rifle ?

What parts interchange from 10/110 savages ?

Yes all the Axis Actions are 4 25/32 in length. The long/short action difference is in the mag well and magazine size.

Need to check on the bolt head size myself I can't remember. I believe Savage has 3 bolt face sizes. .384 for 223 Rem ...473 for the 308's and child catridges and another for the 300win mag.

The Axis does not come in a magnum sized bolt-head, so you have the .223 size and the .308/.30-06 size. The Axis is a gun unto itself with only the barrels, barrel nuts, and mags seeming to interchange.

Yes, I figured that out on the magnum.

I thought the barrels were the same as a small shank savage ?

Yes, they are small shank. I bought a left hand Axis in .270 because I wanted a barrel swapper. I got it for $224 plus tax and call with my Academy employee discount and immediately sold the barrel to a neighbor who had an older 110 with a pitted chamber for $50 and installed it for him. So I have $200 in the rifle. The barrel might have a skinnier profile than the 110 barrel, but not by much. I then screwed in a 7-08 Savage barrel from a package model 11 that I had in the closet. Everything worked fine. Right now the rifle is wearing a .243 sporter barrel U got online. It is a shooter. My decision now is whether I want to buy a Boyds stock or just call Savage and get a short action trigger guard and magazine. I have to seat the .243 and 7-08 ammo at the front of the mag or I get misfeeds.

If you buy an unfinished boyds stock and you want a mat finish wet sand it with Permalyn sealer.
Takes about 15-20 wet sands but when finished is very nice.

I start with a sponge sanding block, tac rag it, then 2 heavy coats and let dry between with a brush then start wet sanding
starting with 180 grit and I end with 320 for the final few. Makes a really nice mat finish. I dilute it 50-50 with mineral spirts.

After every wet sand you wipe the excess off with a lint free rag and let it dry.

Minwax Wipe on clear poly is very similar and works and is cheaper but I think Permilyn fills faster.

I have done 2 laminated Boyds mauser stocks with it and working on a third.
